List Of The Busiest Airports In Armenia
Air transportation in Armenia is the most convenient and comfortable means of getting into the country. There are large international airports that accept both external and domestic flights throughout the Republic. As of 2020, 11 airports operate in Armenia, however, only Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport and Gyumri's Shirak Airport are in use for commercial aviation. There are 3 airports additionally under reconstruction in Armenia, once completed they will be used for commercial and civil aviation, including Syunik Airport, Stepanavan Airport and Goris Airport. Statistics show that the number of passengers arriving in the country by air transportation increases yearly. Syunik Airport
Syunik Airport ( hy, Սյունիքի Oդանավակայան, translit=Syuniki' Odanavakayan) is located east of Kapan, the sixth largest city in Armenia, and the largest city in the province of Syunik. On December 5, 2020, the Civil Aviation Committee of Armenia announced that the reconstruction of the airport was completed and flights between Kapan and Yerevan are planned to begin in the nearest future. Syunik Airport will allow travel between Kapan and Yerevan in just 40 minutes in sharp contrast to the five hour drive. It will also serve other communities of southern Armenia. History The airport originally started as an airstrip in the 1940s receiving occasional flights operated by Soviet Antonov 2 aircraft. Stepanavan Airport
Stepanavan Airport is a civil airport serving the city of Stepanavan and the province of Lori, in the country of Armenia. It is located northwest of the center of Stepanavan. In 2014, reconstruction of the administrative buildings of "Stepanavan" Airport JSC and Kapan airport included replacing fencing and renovation of the runway of the airports. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia will use the airport to fight wildfires. Talks are currently underway with the Russian government about purchasing several fire-fighting aircraft; most probably Beriev Be-200 aircraft. Goris Airport
Goris Airport, also known as Shinuyar Airport or Shinuhayr Airport is located to the south of Goris, near the village of Shinuhayr, Syunik Province, Armenia. It has been closed since the collapse of the USSR in 1991. However, the Armenian government plans on reconstructing the airport and opening it to public and private service by 2019. Zvartnots International Airport
Zvartnots International Airport ( hy, Զվարթնոց միջազգային օդանավակայան, translit=Zvart'nots' mijazgayin ōdanavakayan) is located near Zvartnots, west of Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. It acts as the main international airport of Armenia and is Yerevan's main international transport hub. It is the busiest airport in the country. History The airport was opened in 1961, and following a design competition held in 1970, M. Khachikyan, A. Tarkhanyan, S. Qalashyan, L. Cherkezyan and M. Baghdasaryan won the right to design the first terminal building. Shirak Airport
Gyumri Shirak International Airport ( hy, Գյումրի Շիրակ Միջազգային Oդանավակայան, translit=Gyumri Shirak Mijazgayin Odanavakayan), is an international airport serving Gyumri and the province of Shirak, Armenia. It is about from the center of Gyumri. The airport was inaugurated in 1961, and is the second largest airport in the country, after Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. History The airport terminal was built in 1982 by architects Levon Christophorian and Ruben Asratyan. However, after the earthquake in 1988, the airport became largely inoperable and practically unused until it was partially renewed in 2004. Gyumri
Gyumri ( hy, Գյումրի, ) is an urban municipal community and the second-largest city in Armenia, serving as the administrative center of Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country.
