Leila Al Mutawa
Leila Al Mutawa ( ar, ليلى المطوع, born in 1987 in Muharraq) is a Bahraini novelist and journalist. She is known for writing novels centering frankly on the female perspective in a society with strong fundamentalist elements. Early life Born in Muharraq in 1987 to a devout family, she began reading avidly after receiving a library of masterpieces from her father upon his death, which was supplemented by her mother's book and magazine purchases. At the age of ten, she wrote an article about the danger of tobacco addiction, but was reluctant to become a writer. Moving alone at twenty to the United Arab Emirates, she met a friend whose story inspired the disastrous marriage in her debut novel, written starting in 2008 and published in 2012. Muharraq
Muharraq ( ar, المحرق, al-Muḥarraq) is Bahrain's third largest city and served as its capital until 1932 when it was replaced by Manama. The population of Muharraq in 2012 was 176,583. International Prize For Arabic Fiction
The International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) ( ar, الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية) is the most prestigious and important literary prize in the Arab world. Its aim is to reward excellence in contemporary Arabic creative writing and to encourage the readership of high quality Arabic literature internationally through the translation and publication of winning and shortlisted novels in other major languages. In addition to the prize itself, IPAF supports other literary initiatives. In 2009, IPAF launched its inaugural Nadwa (writers’ workshop) for emerging writers of fiction in Arabic.
