Laurenz Herr
Laurenz Herr (1787 – after 1850), alternatively spelled Lorenz Herr or Laurenz Heer, was an Austria, Austrian enamel painter. He was an artist of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. Biography Laurenz, following in the footsteps of his brother Claudius Herr, Claudius, attended the Academy of Vienna at the age of twelve. Throughout his education, he was awarded three Gundel-Prizes. Herr was hired at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory in 1804. Herr's specialty was painting onyx Cameo (carving), cameos, but he also produced portraits. He was most active in the factory from 1806 through 1831, and again briefly in 1833. His works fetched some of the highest prices compared to other factory artists, but never surpassed those of his brother. Faustin Herr studied under Laurenz in Vienna, and went on to became a lithographer. Vienna Porcelain Manufactory
Vienna porcelain is the product of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory (German: ''Kaiserlich privilegierte Porcellain Fabrique''), a porcelain manufacturer in Alsergrund in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1718 and continued until 1864. The firm was Europe's second-oldest porcelain factory after Meissen porcelain, and for 25 years the two remained the only European producers. Initially it was a private enterprise, founded by Claude du Paquier, an official of the Viennese Imperial court, but in 1744 it was rescued from financial difficulties when bought by the Empress Maria Theresa, and thereafter remained an asset of the emperors. The wares from the earlier, private period before 1744 are the most sought-after today, if only because production was lower and so the pieces are much more rare. Claudius Herr
Johann Claudius Herr (1775 – after 1838), alternatively spelled Klaudius Herr or Claudius Heer, was an Austrian painter and miniaturist. He was well known as an exceptional artist of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. Biography Herr was born in 1775 to a family embroiled in the porcelain trade of Vienna. Several of his family members worked at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, including his father Johann (d. 1792) and his uncle Claudius. By the age of 10, he was already introduced to life at the factory. He showed an aptitude for drawing, and his talents were fostered by the resident artists. He became an apprentice in figure painting in 1791, and he became a student at the Academy of Vienna in 1793. By 1801, Herr was considered one of the best painters in the trade. Cameo (carving)
Cameo () is a method of carving an object such as an engraved gem, item of jewellery or vessel. It nearly always features a raised (positive) relief image; contrast with intaglio, which has a negative image. Originally, and still in discussing historical work, cameo only referred to works where the relief image was of a contrasting colour to the background; this was achieved by carefully carving a piece of material with a flat plane where two contrasting colours met, removing all the first colour except for the image to leave a contrasting background. A variation of a carved cameo is a cameo incrustation (or sulphide). An artist, usually an engraver, carves a small portrait, then makes a cast from the carving, from which a ceramic type cameo is produced. This is then encased in a glass object, often a paperweight. Faustin Herr ( 1834 – 1849), alternatively spelled Faustinus Herr, Faust Heer, or Faust Herr, was an Austrian painter, lithographer, and miniaturist. His works were exhibited in the Viennese art exhibitions of 1834 and 1840. Herr was born in Rottweil, and studied under Laurenz Herr in Vienna. Later he worked in Munich.
