Lake Samsonvale
The North Pine Dam is a mass concrete gravity dam with earth-fill embankments on abutments with a gated spillway across the North Pine River that is located in the South East region of Queensland, Australia. The main purpose of the dam is for supply of potable water for the Moreton Bay region and Brisbane's northern suburbs. The impounded reservoir is called Lake Samsonvale. Location and features The dam is located north-west of Brisbane, within the Moreton Bay region, at Joyner, near the settlements of Whiteside, and Petrie. The North Pine Dam was designed by the Department of Local Government, with the Co-ordinator General's Department supervising construction contracts headed by Transfield. The cost of the dam was 20 million, and the dam was opened on 12 August 1976 by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane City Council, Alderman Frank Sleeman. The concrete dam structure is high and long. Drought in Australia is defined by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology as rainfall over a three-month period being in the lowest decile of what has been recorded for that region in the past. South East Queensland Water Grid
The SEQ Water Grid is a region-wide, long term, water supply scheme that provides a sustainable water infrastructure network for the South East region of Queensland, Australia. The project was the largest urban response to the drought in Australia, which severely affected water supplies in Brisbane and surrounds, particularly between 2004 and 2007. The basic component of the project was a network of potable bulk water pipelines that connect areas that have an oversupply of water to those areas lacking water. The project went online in October 2008 and by November 2008 parts of the region were receiving a diversified supply of water for the first time. Frank Sleeman
Frank Northey Sleeman (4 March 1915 – 1 August 2000) was Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1976 to 1982. Early life and education Sleeman grew up in Redfern, Sydney. He attended Canterbury Boys' High School. Military service and prisoner of war Sleeman was an army lieutenant at the outbreak of the Second World War. He was captured by the Japanese and spent 3 years and 8 months as a prisoner of war in Jentsuji Prison Camp Japan. After the war, Sleeman settled in Townsville and worked as a salesman for the Australian General Electric Company. He married Norma Robinson on 29 December 1945.
