Frank Sleeman
Frank Northey Sleeman (4 March 1915 – 1 August 2000) was Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1976 to 1982. Early life and education Sleeman grew up in Redfern, Sydney. He attended Canterbury Boys' High School. Military service and prisoner of war Sleeman was an army lieutenant at the outbreak of the Second World War. He was captured by the Japanese and spent 3 years and 8 months as a prisoner of war in Jentsuji Prison Camp Japan. After the war, Sleeman settled in Townsville and worked as a salesman for the Australian General Electric Company. He married Norma Robinson on 29 December 1945. Lord Mayor of Brisbane Major Sleeman became Lord Mayor of Brisbane in 1976 after the Labor party leader in the Brisbane City Council, Bryan Walsh, failed to hold his ward. The major project of his time in office was the building of the site for the 1982 Commonwealth Games, which is now named the Sleeman Centre in his honour. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane is the chief executive of the City of Brisbane, the capital of the Australian state of Queensland, and the head of the Brisbane City Council. Sandgate is a northern coastal suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Sandgate had a population of 4,909 people. The town became a popular destination for the people of Brisbane in the early 20th century and remains popular due to its coastline, including Lovers Walk along the bay between Sandgate and neighbouring Shorncliffe as well as Moora Park and Beach. William Charles Roy Harvey (6 January 1921 – 23 April 2006), was Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia from 1982 until 1985. 1982 Commonwealth Games
The 1982 Commonwealth Games were held in Brisbane, Australia, from 30 September to 9 October 1982. The Opening Ceremony was held at the QEII Stadium (named after Elizabeth II), in the Brisbane suburb of Nathan. The QEII Stadium was also the athletics and archery events venue. Other events were held at the purpose-built Sleeman Sports Complex in Chandler. The Chairman of the 1982 Commonwealth Games was Sir Edward Williams. The 1982 Commonwealth Games Logo was designed by Hugh Edwards, who was the winner of a nationwide competition held in 1978. The symbol is derived from the form of a bounding kangaroo.
