Kyrpidia
''Kyrpidia'' is a genus of Gram-positive, rod-shaped, thermophilic, spore-forming bacteria. ''Bacillus tusciae'' was first described in 1984, and had been isolated from a geothermal area in Tuscany, Italy. It was placed within the genus ''Bacillus'' at that time. Further work on the organism led to the creation of a new genus, ''Kyrpidia'', in 2010. The genus was "named in honor of Nikolaos C. Kyrpides, a Greek-American genomics scientist, who co-initiated the Genomic Encyclopedia of ''Archaea'' and ''Bacteria''." ''K. tusciae'' is the type species for the genus. Both species of ''Kyrpidia'' have been isolated from areas of high volcanic activity in Tuscany and the Azores. Alicyclobacillaceae
The Alicyclobacillaceae are a family of Gram-positive bacteria. All members of this family are aerobic and form endospores. The family contains four genera: ''Alicyclobacillus'', ''Effusibacillus'', '' Kyrpidia'', and '' Tumebacillus''. When originally created in 2009, Alicyclobacillaceae was a monophyletic family, only including genus ''Alicyclobacillus''. In 2011, the novel genus '' Kyrpidia'' was proposed and placed in family Alicyclobacillaceae, and '' Tumebacillus'' was placed into the family as well. In 2014, the novel genus ''Effusibacillus'' was proposed and added as the fourth member of Alicyclobacillaceae. ''Alicyclobacillus'' is the largest genus in Alicyclobacillaceae, with over 20 validly published species. The species are all acidophilic and have thermally resistant endospores. Nikos Kyrpides
Nikos Kyrpides (Greek: Νίκος Κυρπίδης) is a Greek-American bioscientist who has worked on the origins of life, information processing, bioinformatics, microbiology, metagenomics and microbiome data science. He is a senior staff scientist at the Berkeley National Laboratory, head of the Prokaryote Super Program and leads the Microbiome Data Science program at the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. Education Kyrpides was born in Serres, Greece, where he studied biology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and received his PhD in molecular biology and biotechnology from the University of Crete. He pursued postdoctoral studies in microbiology with Carl Woese at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in bioinformatics with Ross Overbeek at the Argonne National Laboratory. Bacilli is a taxonomic class of bacteria that includes two orders, Bacillales and Lactobacillales, which contain several well-known pathogens such as ''Bacillus anthracis'' (the cause of anthrax). ''Bacilli'' are almost exclusively gram-positive bacteria. The name ''Bacillus'', capitalized and italicized, refers to a specific genus of bacteria. The currently accepted taxonomy is based on the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and the phylogeny is based on 16S rRNA-based LTP release 132 by The All-Species Living Tree Project.
