Kent Town, South Australia
Kent Town is an inner suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters. History Kent Town was named for Dr. Benjamin Archer Kent (1808 – 25 November 1864), a medical practitioner of Walsall, Staffordshire, who emigrated to South Australia aboard ''Warrior'', arriving in April 1840 with his wife Marjory Redman Kent, née Bonnar, and two children, Benjamin Andrew Kent, and Graham Eliza Kent, who in 1848 married Dr Frederick Charles Bayer (died 15 August 1867). Hydraulic engineer C. A. Bayer and architect E. H. Bayer were sons. Another son, Tom, was a kangaroo hunter, who went to live at the township of Yalata (now Fowlers Bay) on the west coast, and created a cluster of cottages named "Kent Town", which no longer exist. Electoral District Of Dunstan
Dunstan is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly, covering the inner eastern suburbs of Beulah Park, College Park, Evandale, Firle, Hackney, Joslin, Kensington, Kensington Park, Kensington Gardens, Kent Town, Marden, Maylands, Norwood, Payneham, Payneham South, Royston Park, St Morris, St Peters, Stepney, and Trinity Gardens. The electorate was created in the 2012 redistribution of electoral boundaries. It was essentially a reconfigured version of Norwood, with the electoral boundaries remaining unchanged. It is named after the 35th Premier of South Australia, Don Dunstan, who represented Norwood for Labor from 1953 to 1979. Ernest Henry Bayer
Ernest Henry Bayer (21 March 1852 – 20 October 1908) was a South Australian architect, a founder of the South Australian Institute of Architects. His surname has also been spelled Beyer. History Bayer was born in Adelaide, the third son of Dr Frederick Charles Bayer ( – 1867) and Grahame Eliza Bayer née Kent (c. 1831 – 4 April 1892). Doctor Bayer arrived in Australia from Germany aboard the ''Heloise'' in 1847. His widow, who was a daughter of Dr Benjamin Archer Kent (1808 – 25 November 1864) of Kent Town, married again, on 12 April 1881, to T. Reynolds of Caerphilly, Wales. Bayer was sent to England for education, attending Hanwell College, Middlesex, then studied architecture, completing his articles with a London architect, one Saunders, and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Malthouse
A malt house, malt barn, or maltings, is a building where cereal grain is converted into malt by soaking it in water, allowing it to sprout and then drying it to stop further growth. The malt is used in brewing beer, whisky and in certain foods. The traditional malt house was largely phased out during the twentieth century in favour of more mechanised production. Kent Town Brewery
Kent Town Brewery was a brewery in Kent Town, a suburb adjacent to the city of Adelaide on its eastern side, in South Australia. Its original name was Logue's Brewery, after its first proprietor. History The brewery was founded on King William Street, Kent Town near First Creek in 1856 by Capt. Henry Spencer Crawford ( – 14 November 1861), and Edward Logue. Their partnership was dissolved in July 1857. Crawford appears to have been in charge of setting up the process. The brewery was from the start known as "Logue's Brewery", he being both proprietor and brewer. Logue had earlier been involved in the Halifax Street Brewery as a financial partner in W. H. Clark & Co. In March 1862 the brewery and the adjacent house, occupied by Logue and his family, was destroyed by fire. This was followed in August by a flood, which swept two of his men, who were working to protect the building, into the culvert under King William Street, and one was drowned. Edwin Thomas Smith
Sir Edwin Thomas Smith (6 April 1830 – 25 December 1919) was an English-born South Australian brewer, businessman, councillor, mayor, politician and philanthropist. Early years Smith was born on 6 April 1830 at Walsall, Staffordshire, England, the son of Edwin Smith. He was educated at Queen Mary's Grammar School, Walsall, and on leaving school had business experience with an uncle. When only 20 years of age Smith was taking part in local politics. Emigration In 1853 Smith emigrated to South Australia aboard the ''California'' and began business as an importer of ironmongery at Adelaide, initially collaborating with his cousin James Alexander Holden. On 25 June 1857 he married Florence Stock, daughter of Robert Stock of Clifton, England. They would have two surviving children before she died in 1862.
