Kamuzu International Airport is an international airport serving Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. It is also known as Lilongwe International Airport. History The airport was built in 1977 by the Nello L. Teer Company, taking over most airline operations from Old Lilongwe Airport (FWLE) some 6 km west of the city centre. Owned by Airport Developments Limited. Its ICAO code was originally FWLI. In the 1990s, Lilongwe had scheduled passenger service to Europe. British Airways and KLM offered one-stop flights to London and Amsterdam, respectively. Facilities The airport is at an elevation of above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 14/32 with an asphalt surface measuring . Lilongwe (, , ) is the capital and most populated city of the African country of Malawi. It has a population of 989,318 as of the 2018 Census, up from a population of 674,448 in 2008. In 2020 that figure was 1,122,000. The city is located in the central region of Malawi, in the district of the same name, near the borders with Mozambique and Zambia, and it is an important economic and transportation hub for central Malawi.
