Kalgary is an unincorporated community in Crosby County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 70 in 2000. Kalgary is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Kalgary is situated along FM 261 in southeastern Crosby County, about southeast of Lubbock. It is located within the rolling plains along a drainage divide that separates the White River and the Salt Fork Brazos River, both tributaries of the Brazos River. Climate According to the Köppen climate classification system, Kalgary has a semiarid climate, ''BSk'' on climate maps. History The community was established around 1905, when E.P. McDonald Creek (Salt Fork Brazos River Tributary)
McDonald Creek is an intermittent stream, about long, heading about south-southwest of Crosbyton, Texas, and trending generally southeast to join the Salt Fork Brazos River near the community of Verbena, Texas. Geography McDonald Creek rises along the eastern edge of the Caprock Escarpment of the Llano Estacado. The stream channel initially runs southeast then curves to the southwest where it merges with Turkey Creek about west-northwest of Kalgary, Texas. It then runs south to join Lake Creek about upstream of Farm to Market Road 651. The stream then runs southeast where it merges with the Salt Fork Brazos River at a low-water crossing on Farm to Market Road 2008, near the sparsely populated community of Verbena. Mount Blanco
Mount Blanco is a small white hill — an erosional remnant — located on the eastern border of the Llano Estacado within Blanco Canyon in Crosby County, Texas. With Blanco Canyon, it is the type locality of the Blanco Formation of Texas and Kansas, as well as the Blancan fauna, which occurs throughout North America. Geology The term "Blanco Canyon beds", later shortened to "Blanco beds", was first applied to this formation in 1890 by William F. Cummins of the Geological Survey of Texas. The Blanco beds are considered to be of lacustrine origin – deposited in a Pleistocene lake basin set upon the Ogallala Formation of Pliocene age, which underlies the upper surface sediments of the Llano Estacado. Estacado, Texas
Estacado is a ghost town in Crosby and Lubbock Counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Located along Farm to Market Road 1527, it was established in 1879 as a Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) colony by Paris Cox and originally named Maryetta after his wife. In 1886, it became the first government seat of Crosby County. In 1936, Recorded Texas Historic Landmark number 4779 was designated to commemorate the founding of Estacado. Duffy's Peak
Duffy's Peak is a small hill or butte near the Salt Fork Brazos River in Garza County, Texas. Duffy's Peak extends less than above the river, yet despite its small size, it served as an important landmark for early surveyors of the region and is said to be named for a member of the original survey team who died and was buried nearby in the late 1870s. Duffy's Peak is located in the rolling plains to the south and east of the Caprock Escarpment of the Llano Estacado. The soils of the area are moderately deep silt loams that support mesquite, yucca, Cactus, cacti, and grasses. The local terrain is eroded, cut by highly intermittent streams such as the Salt Fork Brazos River, and its tributaries, such as McDonald Creek and Lake Creek. Canyon Valley is a ghost town in southern Crosby County, Texas, United States. Today, only a few farms and ranches are scattered across the area. Geography Canyon Valley is located south of Ralls in southwestern Crosby County. Only one road passes through Canyon Valley, and it is unpaved and passes through a low-water crossing that is often impassable during wet weather.
