Judybats
The Judybats (sometimes stylized as merely Judybats or JudyBats) were an American alternative rock band from Knoxville, Tennessee, United States, active primarily in the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s. The band released three successful singles that charted on the '' Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart: "Native Son", "Saturday" and "Being Simple", the latter of which peaked at No. 7. Background The band was formed in 1988 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Frontman Jeff Heiskell and guitarist Ed Winters were neighbors and had been composing folk songs together. The duo later met bassist Tim Stutz at a local bar called Hawkeye's Corner. Stutz, guitarist Johnny Sughrue and drummer Terry Casper had known each other since high school and had been playing music together as a trio. Peggy Hambright, who was Stutz's and Sughrue's roommate at the time, joined the band, contributing keyboards, violin and vocals. Pain Makes You Beautiful
''Pain Makes You Beautiful'' is the third album by the American band the Judybats, released in 1993 by Sire Records. The album contains the band's most successful single, "Being Simple", which peaked at No. 7 on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Alternative Airplay, Modern Rock Tracks chart. The band supported the album with a North American tour. Production ''Pain Makes You Beautiful'' saw a significant lineup change for the band, with the departure of keyboardist Peggy Hambright and bassist Timothy Stutz and the arrival of bassist Paul Noe and drummer Dave Kenkins. Recorded live in the studio, the album was produced by Kevin Moloney, who helped the band to shorten and rearrange their songs. The recording studio, Long View Farm Studios, was a country barn, built above horse stables. Many of the songs' lyrics were inspired by the lives of frontman Jeff Heiskell and his friends. ''Full-Empty'' is the fourth album by American alternative rock band Judybats, released in 1994 by Sire Records. It was the band's final album for Sire and the last to feature all three original core members Jeff Heiskell, Johnny Sughrue and Ed Winters. Background Heiskell had intended for the album to be produced by Mitchell Froom and even sent him a demo tape of new songs, but was told by the Judybats' manager that attempts to reach Froom had been fruitless. Instead, the band opted to work with producer Paul Mahern, both because "he was cheap" and "was also supposed to have some kind of indie cachet at that time." While recording ''Full-Empty'', Heiskell eventually received a phone call from Froom, who said he liked the songs and expressed interest in working with the band, only to be told they were already working with Mahern. ''Down in the Shacks Where the Satellite Dishes Grow'' is the second album by the American band the Judybats, released in 1992 by Sire Records. The single "Saturday" peaked at No. 21 on the ''Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks chart. Production and promotion Recorded in the summer of 1991, the album was produced by Richard Gottehrer and Jeffrey Lesser. Frontman Jeff Heiskell considered most of the songs to be autobiographical. The album also includes a cover of the Kinks' "Animal Farm". The band had attempted to recruit Kate Pierson of the B-52's to sing on "Poor Bruised World" but were rejected by her agent, who felt she was "overexposed" at the time. A music video was made for "Is Anything". The band opened for the Original Sins on several tour dates. Paul Mahern
Paul Mahern (born September 11, 1963) is an American rock and pop record producer, mixing and mastering engineer, singer, songwriter, professor, and yoga teacher. Mahern has worked with acts such as John Mellencamp, Lily & Madeleine, The Fray, Iggy Pop, Lisa Germano, Willie Nelson, Okkervil River, Over the Rhine, Afghan Whigs, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Magnolia Electric Co., and Neil Young. It was founded in 1991 by Ashley Capps, Rand Pearson, Ian Blackburn, and Margaret Weston, and was a member of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Spinner was an online music and entertainment service. An AOL Music property, it was acquired by AOL on June 1, 1999, along with Nullsoft for $400 million. Based in San Francisco, California, the website was the first Internet music service and was the largest by 2001, while offering promotional features from high-profile recording artists. In 2002, AOL combined Spinner with the former's Netscape portal to form Netscape Radio. Spinner broadcast over 100 radio stations, including Radio CMJ. In 2008, Spinner was revamped by AOL as a music website aimed at the "music aficionado". The website offers exclusive interviews of recording artists, streams of albums and live performances, and a free music download daily.
