Jovellanos
Jovellanos is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Asunción, Isabel, Realengo and San José. It was founded in 1842 as Corral de la Bemba on the location of an old ranch called ''Bemba''. It took its current name in 1870, in honor of the Spanish writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. The same year it achieved the status of ''villa'' (town). Jovellanos is also called "Bemba" by its inhabitants and locals. "Bemba" means "big lip" in Cuban Spanish; this term refers to the black population of the city. To outsiders, it may have negative racial overtones, but in the city this is not the case. Inside Jovellanos, the black and white population for the most part live harmoniously, side by side. Therefore, "Bemba" is an affectionate name for the town used by locals. Gaspar Melchor De Jovellanos
Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (born Gaspar Melchor de Jove y Llanos, 5 January 1744 – 27 November 1811) was a Spanish neoclassical statesman, author, philosopher and a major figure of the Age of Enlightenment in Spain. Life and influence of his works Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (pseudonym Jovino) was born at Gijón in Asturias, Spain. Selecting law as his profession, he studied at Oviedo, Ávila, and the University of Alcalá, before becoming a criminal judge at Seville in 1767. His integrity and ability were rewarded in 1778 by a judgeship in Madrid, and in 1780 by appointment to the council of military orders. Matanzas Province
Matanzas () is one of the provinces of Cuba. Major towns in the province include Cárdenas, Colón, Jovellanos and the capital of the same name, Matanzas. The resort town of Varadero is also located in this province. Perico, Cuba
Perico is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located south of Marti, north of Colón and east of Jovellanos. Geography The municipality is divided into the barrios of Altamisal, Norte, Quintana, Roque, Sur and Tinguaro. It counts the hamlets (''consejos populares'') of España Republicana, meaning ''Republican Spain'', and Máximo Gómez, named after the military commander in Cuban War of Independence. Pedro Betancourt, sometimes shortened as Betancourt, is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located in the center of the province, west of Jagüey Grande and east of Unión de Reyes. It was founded in 1833. History Its original name was Corral Falso de Macurijes. Jagüey Grande
Jagüey Grande, simply known as Jagüey (), is a town and municipality in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located east of the Zapata Peninsula, north of the Bahia de Cochinos, along the A1 motorway in the center of the province. History The town was founded in 1840 and was named after the tree ''Ficus citrifolia'', locally named "Jagüey". Geography The municipality was historically divided into the barrios of Pueblo (town's centre), Gallardo, López, Murga Sinú and Rovira. Cárdenas, Cuba
San Juan de Dios de Cárdenas, or simply Cárdenas (), is a municipality and city in the Matanzas Province of Cuba, about by air by roadeast of Havana. Cárdenas is the 15th most-populated Cuban city and the second most populated one not being a provincial seat, after Manzanillo. Limonar is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Overview The municipality is divided into the barrios of Canímar, Guamacaro, Caoba, Sumidero, Coliseo, and San Miguel.
