John Morison (Canadian Politician)
John Morison (September 9, 1818 – December 5, 1873) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Victoria North in the 1st Canadian Parliament as a Liberal member. He settled in Woodville in 1849, where he entered business as a merchant. Also at Morison married Agnes Smith. He served as reeve for Eldon Township and was postmaster of Woodville for sixteen years. Morison died in Eldon Township at the age of 55. Victoria North (federal Electoral District)
Victoria North was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1904. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867, which divided the County of Victoria divided into two ridings: the South and North Ridings. The North Riding initially consisted of the Townships of Anson, Bexley, Carden, Dalton, Digby, Eldon, Fenelon, Hindon, Laxton, Lutterworth, Macaulay and Drapper, Sommerville, and Morrison, Muskoka, Monck and Watt (taken from the County of Simcoe), and any other surveyed townships lying to the north of the North Riding. The 1st Canadian Parliament was in session from November 6, 1867, until July 8, 1872. The membership was set by the 1867 federal election from August 7 to September 20, 1867. It was prorogued prior to the 1872 election. It was controlled by a majority coalition between the Conservative Party and the Liberal-Conservative Party under Prime Minister Sir John A. Woodville, Ontario
Woodville is a community in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada. It is located west of Lindsay. The population is approximately 650. History Known in the late 19th century as Irish Corners, the name of the town was changed to Woodville after the completion of the post office under postmaster John Morrison. In 1871 the Toronto and Nipissing Railway was built through the flourishing settlement and in 1878 Woodville became a police village. Woodville had a town hall, lock-up, grist-mill, two foundries, a cheese factory, planing mill and sash and door factory, a number of dry goods stores, mechanics' shops, and three hotels. It also had its own brick school house, with two teachers, and two churches – one Presbyterian, the other Methodist. Today, the cheese factory, rail station, gristmill, mechanics shops, and hotels have all been shut down. The City of Kawartha Lakes (2021 population 79,247) is a unitary municipality in Central Ontario, Canada.
