John Bowler (businessman)
John Bowler, MBE (14 February 1937 – 16 February 2022) was an English businessman and the chairman of Crewe Alexandra Football Club. Elected chairman in 1988, he resigned in March 2021 following criticisms of him and the club in the Football Association's inquiry into sex abuse in English football. Biography Having joined the board in 1980, Bowler became chairman at Crewe Alexandra in 1988, succeeding Norman Rowlinson. Prior to joining Crewe, he was a marketing director at pharmaceutical company Wellcome. His time at Crewe coincided with the appointment and long tenure of manager Dario Gradi, the most successful period in its history. Under his chairmanship, the club won promotion six times (twice at Wembley). Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Crewe Alexandra F
Crewe () is a railway town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. The Crewe built-up area had a total population of 75,556 in 2011, which also covers parts of the adjacent civil parishes of Willaston, Cheshire East, Willaston, Shavington cum Gresty and Wistaston. Crewe is perhaps best known as a large railway junction and home to Crewe Works; for many years, it was a major railway engineering facility for manufacturing and overhauling locomotives, but now much reduced in size. Norman Rowlinson
Norman Rowlinson (June 1923 – 18 August 2006) was an English businessman and chairman of Crewe Alexandra from 1964 to 1988, credited with keeping the club afloat during its toughest financial times. A director of a timber business, he joined Crewe as a director in 1962, and became chairman in 1964. Crewe achieved promotion from the Fourth Division on two occasions during the 1960s, but initially unable to establish themselves at the higher level. In 1963, Crewe secured their first promotion to the Third Division, finishing in third place, but were relegated back to Division Four the following season. Managed by Ernie Tagg, the club achieved promotion for a second time in 1967–68, but again spent just one season in the Third Division. From 1969, Crewe spent 20 years in Division Four, finishing bottom in 1971–72, 1978–79 and 1981–82. Rowlinson appointed Tony Waddington as manager in 1978. Dario Gradi
Dario Gradi, MBE (born 8 July 1941) is an Italian-English former amateur football player, coach and manager. He was associated for more than 36 years with Crewe Alexandra, where he was variously manager, director of football and director of the Academy, until October 2019. Gradi played as an amateur for clubs in the London area (and won an England amateur cap); he then took on various coaching roles in the region. His first major managerial success was achieved with Wimbledon after which he briefly managed Crystal Palace in 1981. Gradi had a 24-year first spell as manager of Crewe between 1983 and 2007. He stepped down from his managerial role in 2007, handing first-team responsibilities to Steve Holland, and became technical director. The 1997–98 Football League (known as the Nationwide Football League for sponsorship reasons) was the 99th completed season of The Football League. Champions Nottingham Forest and runners-up Middlesbrough won promotion back to the Premiership at the first time of asking. Charlton Athletic won the play-offs to end an eight-year absence from the top flight. Reading were relegated in bottom place. They were joined on the last day of the season by Manchester City and Stoke City.
