Johanna Bugge Berge
Johanna Bugge Berge (1874–1961) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator and church decorator. In 1894, she was one of ten artists who participated in the Vågåsommeren artists' colony in Vågå, Innlandet County. After marrying Rikard Berge in 1908, she illustrated several of his books with subjects from Norwegian folklore. In 1927, she performed extensive decoration work in Lunde Church in Nome, Telemark. Early life Born on 1 October 1874 in Kristiania (today's Oslo), Johanna Bugge was the daughter of the prominent linguist Elseus Sophus Bugge (1833–1907) and Karen Sophie Schreiner (1833–1897). Together with her two brothers, she was brought up in a well-to-do home where she was able to develop her talents. Vågåsommeren
Vågåsommeren or the Vågå Summer was a Norwegian art colony, artists' collective which came together in Vågå, Innlandet County, in 1894. It consisted of ten painters, all of whom had spent the previous year studying art at Harriet Backer's school in Kristiania (today's Oslo). They were looking for a more relaxed approach to painting than the strict, clear-cut Realism (arts), Realism of the times. Kristen Holbø, together with his good friend and fellow student Halfdan Egedius, both from Vågå, invited their fellow students to spend the summer in the area. Kristen Holbø
Kristen Holbø (13 September 1869 – 19 October 1953) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator, most noted for his landscapes. Biography He was born on Sygard Holbø in Vågå in Oppland county, Norway. He studied under Knud Bergslien in 1890, Eilif Peterssen and Harriet Backer in 1893 and 1894, and under Kristian Zahrtmann during the winters from 1897 to 1902. In 1909, Holbø held his first solo exhibition in Christiania Art Society. Holbø lived in Vågå until 1912, when the family moved to Lillehammer. From 1946 he received the National Artist salary. His painting had a distinctly home-like tone, with a broad brush and robust palette. He often portrayed his home village and surrounding mountains of Gudbrandsdalen. As a landscape painter he described first and foremost his hometown, and also the mountainous area of Jotunheimen. Jens Ferdinand Willumsen
Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (7 September 1863 – 4 April 1958) was a Danish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, architect and photographer. He became associated with the movements of Symbolism and Expressionism. Biography J. F. Willumsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the son of Hans Willumsen and Ane Kirstine. He was initially trained in art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1885 and in architecture at the Copenhagen Technical College from 1879 to 1882. He completed his education in 1885 with the artists P.S. Krøyer (1851-1909) and Laurits Tuxen (1853–1927). His works were exhibited in the Paris Salon, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Société des Artistes Indépendants, the art gallery of Le Barc de Boutteville and at the Exposition Universelle (1900). Kviteseid
Kviteseid is a Municipalities of Norway, municipality in Telemark in the Counties of Norway, county of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway. It is part of the Districts of Norway, traditional region of Upper Telemark and Vest-Telemark. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Kviteseid. The Exposition Universelle of 1900, better known in English as the 1900 Paris Exposition, was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 14 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. Gerhard Munthe
Gerhard Peter Frantz Munthe (19 July 1849 in Elverum, Hedmark – 15 January 1929 in Lysaker, Bærum) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator. Background Munthe was born in Elverum to physician Christopher Pavels Munthe (1816–1884) and his wife Christine Margrethe Pavels Aabel (1827–1887). He was a brother of historian Hartvig Andreas Munthe, writer Margrethe Munthe and military officer Carl Oscar Munthe. He was also a nephew of historian and cartographer Gerhard Munthe and an uncle of genealogist Christopher Morgenstierne Munthe, librarian Wilhelm Munthe and painter Lagertha Munthe. Jens Thiis
Jens Thiis (12 May 1870 – 27 June 1942) was a Norwegian art historian, conservator and a prominent museum director. He was conservator at the Nordenfjeld Industrial Arts Museum (''Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum'') in Trondheim beginning in 1895 and director of the National Gallery in Oslo from 1908 to 1941. Oluf Wold-Torne
Oluf Wold-Torne (7 November 1867 – 19 March 1919) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator, educator and designer. He was known primarily for landscapes and still-lifes and was influenced by Cézanne. Biography He was born in Son (now Vestby), Norway. He was the son of Oluf Emil Wold (1826–67) and Marie Therese Ottesen (1838–193). His father had been in the timber business, but went bankrupt and died before he was born. In 1869 his mother married merchant Søren Thorne (1817-1900). He grew up in the village of Hølen in Akershus where his step-father owned a general store. After displaying some artistic talent, his relatives sent him for his first art lessons at the Royal Drawing School (now Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry) in 1887, under Wilhelm Peters. Alfred Hauge (painter)
Harald Alfred Hauge (1876–1901) was a Norwegian painter who is remembered for his Symbolism (arts), symbolist works. In 1894, he was one of ten artists who spent the summer months together in the collective known as Vågåsommeren. During his short life he travelled to Denmark, Belgium, France and Spain. Works by Hauge are in the collection of the National Museum of Norway.
