Gerhard Peter Frantz Munthe (19 July 1849 in Elverum (town), Elverum, Hedmark – 15 January 1929 in Lysaker, Bærum Municipality, Bærum) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator. Background Munthe was born in Elverum (town), Elverum to physician Christopher Pavels Munthe (1816–1884) and his wife Christine Margrethe Pavels Aabel (1827–1887). He was a brother of writer Margrethe Munthe and historians and military officers Hartvig Andreas Munthe and Carl Oscar Munthe. He was also a nephew of historian and cartographer Gerhard Munthe (cartographer), Gerhard Munthe and an uncle of genealogist Christopher Morgenstierne Munthe, librarian Wilhelm Munthe, and painter Lagertha Munthe. Gerhard Munthe (cartographer)
Gerhard Munthe (4 January 1795, Hafslo – 15 December 1876, Luster) was a Norwegian military officer, historian and cartographer. Biography He was born to Major Hartvig Kaas Munthe (1766–1830) and his wife, Bolette Christine, née Pavels (1774–1861), the daughter of a minister. He began attending the war school in Christiania (Oslo) in 1807 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1811. That same year, he was retained by the Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority. In 1814, he became a First Lieutenant and participated in the Swedish-Norwegian War as a cartographer; mapping the battlefields near Kongsvinger. The following year, he was part of a geographical survey team charged with creating a large topographical map of Scandinavia. Bjørn Bjørnson (15 November 1859 – 14 May 1942) was a Norwegian stage actor and theatre director. In art and iconography, a motif () is an element of an image. Motifs can occur both in figurative and narrative art, and in ornament and geometrical art. A motif may be repeated in a pattern or design, often many times, or may just occur once in a work. Ludvig Munthe
Ludvig Munthe (11 March 1841 – 30 March 1896) was a Norwegian-born, German landscape painter. Biography Ludvig Munthe was born at Årøy, near Sogndal in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. He came to Bergen in 1858 where he was first instructed by Franz Wilhelm Schiertz, a German painter and architect residing in Norway. Munthe later moved to Düsseldorf where he became a pupil of Albert Flamm at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He subsequently selected Düsseldorf for his permanent residence. Munthe is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Andreas Achenbach
Andreas Achenbach (29 September 1815 – 1 April 1910) was a German landscape and seascape painter in the Romantic style. He is considered to be one of the founders of the Düsseldorf School. His brother, Oswald, was also a well known landscape painter. Together, based on their initials, they were known as the "Alpha and Omega" of landscape painters. Biography Achenbach's father Hermann (1783–1849) was a merchant by trade but worked a number of professions. In 1816, he became the manager of a metal factory in Mannheim. Two years later, Achenbach's family moved to Saint Petersburg where his father wanted to set up a factory with the money that his mother had received as an inheritance. Knud Bergslien
Knud Larsen Bergslien (15 May 1827 – 27 November 1908) was a Norwegian painter, art teacher and master artist. In his art, he frequently portrayed the lives of the Norwegian people, their history and heroes of the past. Bergslien is most associated with his historical paintings, especially ''Skiing Birchlegs Crossing the Mountain with the Royal Child''. Background Knud Larsen Bergslien was born in Voss, in Hordaland, Norway. His parents were Lars Bergeson Bergslien and Kirsten Knutsdotter Gjelle. Morten Müller
Morten Müller (13 February 1828 – 10 February 1911) was a Norwegian landscape painter. Biography Morten Müller was born by the Christianiafjord at Holmestrand, in Vestfold County, Norway. Morten Müller began his art studies with Adolph Tidemand and Hans Gude in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 1847 to 1848. From 1850 he was again a student at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer as a teacher. From 1850 to 1851, Müller painted with the Swedish landscape painter Marcus Larson in Stockholm. Oslo
