Johan Marais
Johannes Hendricus Marais (born 28 May 1959 in Pretoria, South Africa) is a former South African rugby union player. Playing career Marais represented the Northern Transvaal Schools team at the 1975 and the 1976 annual Craven Week tournament. After matriculating at Hoërskool Menlopark, Marais enrolled at the University of Pretoria in 1977. He played and captained the Northern Transvaal under–20 team and made his senior provincial debut for Northern Transvaal in 1980. At the end of the 1980 rugby season, Marais was nominated as one of the five South African young players of the year. Marais toured with the Springboks to New Zealand in 1981. He did not play in any test matches for the Springboks, but played in five tour matches, scoring one try. In the game of rugby union, there are 15 players on each team, comprising eight forwards (wearing jerseys numbered 1–8) and seven backs (numbered 9–15). In addition, there may be up to eight replacement players "on the bench", numbered 16–23. The Blue Bulls (known for sponsorship reasons as the Vodacom Blue Bulls) is a South African rugby union team that participates in the annual Currie Cup tournament. They are governed by the Blue Bulls Rugby Union and are based at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, Gauteng province. Craven Week
The Craven Week is an annual rugby union tournament organised for schoolboys in the Republic of South Africa. The tournament started in July 1964, and is named after the legendary Springbok rugby union player and coach Dr Danie Craven. The tournament has its humble beginnings in an idea by Piet Malan, then Springbok flanker, in 1949, around the time of the South African Rugby Board's 75th anniversary. He wanted schools to feature in the celebrations and approached Danie Craven in Potgietersrus on how this could be done. Dr Craven took the idea to his board who decided on getting the 15 schools unions together for a week. The man who kept the idea alive however was one Jan Preuyt, a former student at the University of Stellenbosch and teacher at Port Rex Technical School in East London. The 1981 South African rugby tour (known in New Zealand as the Springbok Tour, and in South Africa as the Rebel Tour) polarised opinions and inspired widespread protests across New Zealand. The controversy also extended to the United States, where the South African rugby team continued their tour after departing New Zealand. Apartheid had made South Africa an international pariah, and other countries were strongly discouraged from having sporting contacts with it.
