ICanServe Foundation, Inc., formerly Information on Breast Cancer and Other Services,Magsanoc-Alikapala, Kara. ICanServe, A Network of People, Places & Services for the Philippine Breast Cancer Community, 2nd Edition. Metro Manila: ICanServe, 2002. is a non-stock, non-profit organization that advocates early breast cancer detection through breast self-examination. Based in Manila, Philippines, and co-founded in 1999 by journalist Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, a breast cancer survivor, the advocacy group empowers women with breast cancer and women cancer-related information so they can have a voice in their own health care. Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala
Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala is a Philippine broadcast journalist who produces news documentaries. When diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, she fought the disease with the help of doctors and survived. She founded the advocacy organization '' ICanServe'' which has the mission of arming "women with breast care health and breast cancer information through high impact campaigns." In addition, Magsanoc-Alikpala is the managing director of Manila-based Asianeye Productions and a contributing producer to CNN. She was selected as one of three celebrity critics for the Philippine reality-show "Dokyu". She lives and works in Manila. Breast Self-examination
Breast self-examination (BSE) is a screening method used in an attempt to detect early breast cancer. The method involves the woman herself looking at and feeling each breast for possible lumps, distortions or swelling. BSE was once promoted heavily as a means of finding cancer at a more curable stage, but large randomized controlled studies found that it was not effective in preventing death, and actually caused harm through needless biopsies, surgery, and anxiety. The World Health Organization and other organizations recommend against BSE. Other organizations take a neutral stance, and do not recommend for or against BSE. Breast awareness is an informal alternative to breast self-examinations. Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue. Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, milk rejection, fluid coming from the nipple, a newly inverted nipple, or a red or scaly patch of skin. In those with distant spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath, or yellow skin. Risk factors for developing breast cancer include obesity, a lack of physical exercise, alcoholism, hormone replacement therapy during menopause, ionizing radiation, an early age at first menstruation, having children late in life or not at all, older age, having a prior history of breast cancer, and a family history of breast cancer.
