Hushan Dam
The Hushan Dam () is a dam in Douliu City, Yunlin County, Taiwan. It is the newest dam in Taiwan. History and objectives The planning of the dam started already in 1979 and but was approved by Executive Yuan only in 2001. The stated goals of the dam are to "improve both quantity and quality for the domestic water supply in Yunlin County, reduce abstraction of ground water, slow down subsidence and improve environmental quality". Land subsidence, associated with groundwater extraction, has been a problem particularly in Yunlin. Critics maintain that industry needs motivated the dam. The construction of the dam started in 2002 by Continental Engineering Corporation. However, the construction was delayed for three times due to environmental and historical site preservation issues. Douliu
Douliu (Hokkien POJ: ''Táu-la̍k'') is a county-administered city and the county seat of Yunlin County, Taiwan. It is also the political and economic center of the county. Douliu City is served by National Highway No. 3. Name Its former name () came from a language of the Hoanya people, a tribe of the Taiwanese plains aborigines. Yunlin County
Yunlin County (Mandarin pinyin: ''Yúnlín Xiàn''; Taigi POJ: ''Hûn-lîm-koān''; Hakka PFS: ''Yùn-lìm-yen'') is a county in western Taiwan. Yunlin County borders the Taiwan Strait to the west, Nantou County to the east, Changhua County to the north at the Zhuoshui River, and Chiayi County to the south at the Beigang River. Yunlin is part of the Chianan Plain, a flat land known for its agriculture. Agricultural products of Yunlin County include pomelo, tea leaves, suan cai, papaya and muskmelon. The Executive Yuan () is the executive branch of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Its leader is the Premier, who is appointed by the President of the Republic of China, and requires confirmation by the Legislative Yuan. Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC; ) is a large Taiwanese construction company. History The company was originally founded by Glyn T. H. Ing in 1941 as Wei Dah Corporation in Chungking, Sichuan. In 1945, the company was restructured to become Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC) and its headquarters was moved to Shanghai. It also set up branch offices in Nanking and Taipei. Towards the end of Chinese Civil War, CEC moved to Taiwan in 1948. In 1986, the company underwent restructuring movement from family-run business to become a modern and professionally managed corporation. Sluice ( ) is a word for a channel controlled at its head by a movable gate which is called a sluice gate.
