Henry Miller (Australian Politician)
Henry Miller (31 December 1809 – 7 February 1888) was an Australian banker and politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Miller was born in Derry, Ireland, the son of Captain Henry Miller, of H.M.'s 40th Regiment of Foot, who served with distinction in the Peninsular War, and was at the battle of Waterloo, and his wife Jane, ''née'' Morpeth. In 1823 Miller senior proceeded with a detachment of his regiment in charge of a batch of convicts to Sydney, his family accompanying him. Early career Shortly afterwards Miller senior was appointed commandant at Moreton Bay, where he spent eighteen months, and was then transferred to Van Diemen's Land, where he died at Hobart in 1866. After the arrival of the family in what was afterwards Tasmania, Miller junior obtained an appointment as an accountant in the audit office at Hobart, and at the age of twenty-four married Eliza, second daughter of the late Captain Mattinson of the Merchant Service. John Hood (c.1817 – 22 November 1877) was an Australian chemist and politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council, and later, the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Early life Hood was born in County Antrim, Ireland, the son of James Hood, a farmer, and Margaret, ''nee'' O'Neill. Early career In June 1840, Hood arrived in Melbourne and joined the firm of Robert Wilson & Company around 1841, later becoming head of the firm. Political career On the inauguration of the constitution in 1856 Hood was returned to the Upper House for the Central province until resigning in September 1859. Hood then successfully stood for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Belfast. John Pascoe Fawkner
John Pascoe Fawkner (20 October 1792 – 4 September 1869) was an early Australian pioneer, businessman and politician of Melbourne, Australia. In 1835 he financed a party of free settlers from Van Diemen's Land (now called Tasmania), to sail to the mainland in his ship, '' Enterprize''. Fawkner's party sailed to Port Phillip and up the Yarra River to found a settlement which became the city of Melbourne. Early years John Pascoe Fawkner was born near Cripplegate London in 1792 to John Fawkner (a metal refiner) and his wife Hannah ''née'' Pascoe, whose parents were Cornish. John Hodgson (Australian Politician)
John Hodgson (1799 – 2 August 1860) was an Australian politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council and Mayor of Melbourne 1853–54. He died at his house in Kew of bronchitis. Arrival in Melbourne According to his great, great grand daughter, Hodgson was born at Studley, Wadworth, Yorkshire in 1799 to William and Mary Hodgson. The Re-member database puts his birthplace in the small west Yorkshire village of Wadsworth. Studley in Wadworth, and therefore its use in Melbourne, probably draws on the now World Heritage site of Studley Royal Park Yorkshire, famous for the gardens developed over a hundred years from 1716 by the Aislabie family. The gardens were a popular tourist destination during the 19th century. The oral source says he and his wife, Annie Buckley Hodgson, with three sons and three daughters arrived in Sydney, Australia in 1837. Later that year they settled in Melbourne. Henry Samuel Chapman
Henry Samuel Chapman (21 July 1803 – 27 December 1881) was an Australian and New Zealand judge, colonial secretary, attorney-general, journalist and politician. Early life Chapman was born at Kennington, London, the son of Henry Chapman, English civil servant, and his wife Ann, daughter of Rev. Thomas Hart Davies. Chapman was educated privately at Bromley, Kent. In 1818, he entered a bank, then in 1823 emigrated to Quebec, Canada where he went into business as a commission merchant. In 1833 he started the first Canadian daily newspapers, the radical ''Montreal Daily Advertiser'', in association with Samuel Revans. In 1835, Chapman returned to England as a salaried intermediary between the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada and its friends in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. John Dane (Australian Politician)
John Dane (7 January 1810 – 30 April 1882) was a British army officer and politician in colonial Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council and later, the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Early life Dane was born in Killyhewlin, County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of Captain John Dane and Margaret Humphries. Dane junior retired from the British army with rank of captain in the 53rd Regiment. Colonial Australia Dane arrived in Melbourne in August 1851 and was appointed assistant gold commissioner at Bendigo in December 1851. He resigned the following February and returned to Melbourne, purchasing land in Boroondara in 1853. In 1853 he was elected to the unicameral Victorian Legislative Council for South Bourke, Evelyn and Mornington, a seat he held until resigning in November 1854. Mill Park is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 18 km north-east of Melbourne's central business district, located within the City of Whittlesea local government area. Mill Park recorded a population of 28,712 at the 2021 census. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. South Yarra Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from November 1882 until May 1904. South Yarra Province was created in the redistribution of provinces in 1882 when the Central and Eastern Provinces were abolished.
