John Hodgson (Australian Politician)
John Hodgson (1799 – 2 August 1860) was an Australian politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council and Mayor of Melbourne 1853–54. He died at his house in Kew of bronchitis. Arrival in Melbourne According to his great, great grand daughter, Hodgson was born at Studley, Wadworth, Yorkshire in 1799 to William and Mary Hodgson. The Re-member database puts his birthplace in the small west Yorkshire village of Wadsworth. Studley in Wadworth, and therefore its use in Melbourne, probably draws on the now World Heritage site of Studley Royal Park Yorkshire, famous for the gardens developed over a hundred years from 1716 by the Aislabie family. The gardens were a popular tourist destination during the 19th century. The oral source says he and his wife, Annie Buckley Hodgson, with three sons and three daughters arrived in Sydney, Australia in 1837. Later that year they settled in Melbourne. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). John O'Shanassy
Sir John O'Shanassy, KCMG (18 February 1818 – 5 May 1883), was an Irish-Australian politician who served as the 2nd Premier of Victoria. O'Shanassy was born near Thurles in County Tipperary, Ireland, the son of a surveyor, and came to the Port Phillip District (later Victoria) in 1839. He went into business in Melbourne as a draper, and by 1846 he was rich enough to be elected to the Melbourne City Council and to become the founding chairman of the Colonial Bank of Australasia. By the 1850s he was a major landowner and one of the wealthiest men in the colony. He also became a recognised leader of the large Irish Catholic community. Nehemiah Guthridge
Nehemiah Guthridge (c.1808 - 27 June 1878), was an Irish-born Melbourne ironmonger, a city councillor in Melbourne, a parliamentarian representing the Central Province (November 1856 to August 1858) in the Legislative Council, a prominent Wesleyan and the first mayor of Sale in 1863. Guthridge was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of Thomas Guthridge, a farmer, and Jane, ''nee'' Quigley. Guthridge and William Nicholson were among the first promoters of the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company, also providing funding for the initial survey. He also provided considerable financing for the Ballarat and Geelong railway projects. Guthridge was married to Martha Erskine (*1814). George Ward Cole
George Ward Cole F.R.G.S., Commander R.N. (15 November 1793 – 26 April 1879) was a Royal Navy officer and politician in Australia, member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Cole was the fourth son of John Cole, of Durham, and was born at Lumley Castle, in that county. He entered the Royal Navy in October 1807, and served with distinction in various parts of the world, being on several occasions severely wounded. Having been placed on half-pay in October. 1817, Captain Cole went into the merchant service, and commanded several vessels of which he was part owner. After numerous adventurous voyages, and engaging in various speculations, Captain Cole in 1839 decided to settle in Sydney, and purchased land there; but, after a visit to England, he changed his intention, and made his home in Victoria where he arrived in July 1840, and started business in Melbourne. John Hood (c.1817 – 22 November 1877) was an Australian chemist and politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council, and later, the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Early life Hood was born in County Antrim, Ireland, the son of James Hood, a farmer, and Margaret, ''nee'' O'Neill. Early career In June 1840, Hood arrived in Melbourne and joined the firm of Robert Wilson & Company around 1841, later becoming head of the firm. Thomas Howard Fellows (October 1822 – 8 April 1878) was an English rower and an Australian politician and Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Early life in England Fellows was born at Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, the son of Thomas Fellows, solicitor, and his wife Mary Howard. He was educated at Eton College and then worked with his father. He studied in Pleaders' chambers and was later assistant to the master pleader, Thomas Chitty. In 1847 he published ''The Law of Costs as Affected by the Small Debts Act and Other Statutes''. Fellows was also an enthusiastic rower and rowed for Leander Club. Henry Miller (Australian Politician)
Henry Miller (31 December 1809 – 7 February 1888) was an Australian banker and politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Miller was born in Derry, Ireland, the son of Captain Henry Miller, of H.M.'s 40th Regiment of Foot, who served with distinction in the Peninsular War, and was at the battle of Waterloo, and his wife Jane, ''née'' Morpeth. In 1823 Miller senior proceeded with a detachment of his regiment in charge of a batch of convicts to Sydney, his family accompanying him. Early career Shortly afterwards Miller senior was appointed commandant at Moreton Bay, where he spent eighteen months, and was then transferred to Van Diemen's Land, where he died at Hobart in 1866. John Pascoe Fawkner (20 October 1792 – 4 September 1869) was an early Australian pioneer, businessman and politician of Melbourne, Australia. In 1835 he financed a party of free settlers from Van Diemen's Land (now called Tasmania), to sail to the mainland in his ship, '' Enterprize''. Fawkner's party sailed to Port Phillip and up the Yarra River to found a settlement which became the city of Melbourne. Thomas Rae (1819 – 10 December 1862) was a manufacturer and politician in colonial Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Rae was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of James Rae and Jean, ''née'' Weir. Rae was educated at a public school in Glasgow and became an apprentice engineer. Colonial Australia Rae emigrated to the Port Phillip District in 1848. He joined the firm of Jackson, Rae & Co., his brother being a partner.
