South Yarra Province
South Yarra Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from November 1882 until May 1904. South Yarra Province was created in the redistribution of provinces in 1882 when the Central and Eastern Provinces were abolished. The new South Yarra, North Yarra, North Central, South Eastern and Melbourne Provinces were then created. The Legislative Council Act, 1881, created and defined the South Yarra Province as: South Yarra Province was abolished in another redistribution of Provinces in 1904; new provinces including East Yarra, Melbourne East Province, Melbourne North Province, Melbourne South Province and Melbourne West Province Melbourne West Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1904 until 2006. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). John Mark Davies
Sir John Mark Davies (8 February 184012 September 1919) was a British-born Australian politician. Born in Halstead, Essex, England in 1840, Davies was the fifth eldest of the six boys and six girls of Ebenezer Davies and Ruth Bartlett. Two of the younger boys were educated at Geelong Grammar School. John was articled in 1852 and in 1863 was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria as a solicitor. He worked as a partner in a law firm for some years, and was President of the Law Institute of Victoria in 1885–86; he was made the group's first honorary life member in 1919. Simon Fraser (Australian Politician)
Sir Simon Fraser (21 August 1832 – 30 July 1919) was a Canadian-Australian businessman, pastoralist, and politician. He served as a Senator for Victoria from 1901 to 1913, having previously been a member of the colonial Parliament of Victoria. Early life Fraser was born on 21 August 1832 in Big Brook (now known as Lorne), a small rural township in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the youngest son of Jane (née Fraser) and William Fraser. His parents shared the same surname, although no familial connection has been noted between the two. Fraser's father was born in Beauly, Inverness-shire, Scotland, and claimed descent from Clan Fraser of Lovat. He arrived in Nova Scotia in 1801, as a small child. Frederick Thomas Sargood
Sir Frederick Thomas Sargood (30 May 1834 – 2 January 1903) was an Australian politician, Minister of Defence and Education in the Government of Victoria 1890–1892 and Senator in the Australian Senate 1901–03. James MacBain
Sir James MacBain (19 April 1828 – 4 November 1892) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), President of the Victorian Legislative Council. MacBain was the youngest son of Smith MacBain, of Invergordon, Ross-shire, Scotland, and was born at Kinrhive in that county in 1828. He served a business apprenticeship in Inverness. In 1853 he married Jessie Smith, youngest daughter of William Smith, of Forres, and sister of the late Duncan Smith, manager of the Oriental Bank Corporation at Bombay. James Graham (Victorian Politician)
James Graham (5 February 1819 – 31 July 1898) was a merchant and politician in colonial Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Graham was born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, the son of Dr. James Moore Graham and his wife Anna Maria, ''née'' Ievers. Graham was educated at Ennis College and Madras Academy, Cupar, after the family moved to Fife in 1832. Colonial Australia Graham junior arrived in Sydney in 1839 and travelled overland to the Port Phillip District. On 29 August 1853 Graham was nominated to the unicameral Victorian Legislative Council along with several others due to the expansion of the Council.
