John Mark Davies
Sir John Mark Davies (8 February 184012 September 1919) was a British-born Australian politician. Born in Halstead, Essex, England in 1840, Davies was the fifth eldest of the six boys and six girls of Ebenezer Davies and Ruth Bartlett. Two of the younger boys were educated at Geelong Grammar School. John was articled in 1852 and in 1863 was admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria as a solicitor. He worked as a partner in a law firm for some years, and was President of the Law Institute of Victoria in 1885–86; he was made the group's first honorary life member in 1919. Political career Davies served in the Victorian Legislative Council from 1889 to 1919, representing first the South Yarra Province (1889–1895) then Melbourne Province (1899–1919). and was Minister for Health for two months in 1891. President Of The Victorian Legislative Council
The President of the Victorian Legislative Council, also known as the presiding officer of the council, is the presiding officer of the Victorian Legislative Council, the upper house of the Parliament of Victoria and equivalent to the President of the Australian Senate. When there is a vacancy in the office of president, a new president is elected by the members of the council from among its number. The president ceases to hold that office if they cease to be a member of the council, and can be removed at any time by a vote of the members. The current president is Shaun Leane. Agar Wynne
Agar Wynne (15 July 185012 May 1934) was an Australian lawyer and politician. He began his career in the Victorian Legislative Council and served two terms as Solicitor-General of Victoria. In 1906, he transferred to the federal House of Representatives. He was Postmaster-General of Australia in the Cook Government from 1913 to 1914, but retired from federal politics at the 1914 election. He re-entered Victorian politics and briefly served as Attorney-General of Victoria (1917–1918). Early life Wynne was born in London, but his family emigrated to Australia when he was a child. Henry Cuthbert
Sir Henry Cuthbert , (29 July 1829 – 5 April 1907) was a politician in Victoria (Australia), member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Cuthbert was born in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, the eldest son of John Cuthbert. Cuthbert was educated at Drogheda Grammar School, winning the classical medal, and studied law. In 1854 he was admitted a solicitor in Ireland, and the same year left for Victoria, where he was at once admitted to practice. In 1855 he went to Ballarat, and, besides being successful in his profession, became largely interested in mining. He was the original promoter of the Buninyong Gold Mining Company. In September 1874 Cuthbert was returned to the Legislative Council, unopposed, for the South-Western Province, and in November 1882 was transferred to the new Wellington Province. Walter Manifold
Sir Walter Synnot Manifold (30 March 1849 – 15 November 1928) was an Australian grazier and politician. Born in Melbourne, Manifold was the son of Thomas Manifold, the pioneer grazier in the Western District, and a descendant of Sir Walter Synnot. He was educated at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School and the University of Melbourne and in France and Germany, and qualified as a solicitor in 1875, but never practised. Instead he became a grazier, owning first Sesbania station in northern Queensland from 1876 to 1884 and then Wollaston station near Warrnambool from 1886 until it was sold for soldier settlement in 1914. In 1885 he married Fanny Maria Smith. He was elected to the Legislative Council of Victoria for the Western Province in 1901, and held the seat until 1924, as a non-Labor, later Nationalist, member. Henry Wrixon
Sir Henry John Wrixon (18 October 1839 – 9 April 1913) was an Australian barrister and politician. Early life Wrixon was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Arthur Nicholas Wrixon, later a county court judge in Victoria, Australia, and his wife, Charlotte Matilda (daughter of Captain William Bace who fought under Wellington). Wrixon came to Victoria with his father in 1850, was educated in Portland, Victoria, entered the University of Melbourne in its inaugural year of 1855, and became one of the earliest students to matriculate there. In 1857 he returned to Ireland and entered Trinity College Dublin, graduating with a BA in 1861; the same year was called to the Irish Bar. Henry Weedon
Sir Henry Weedon (26 March 1859 – 26 March 1921) was an Australian politician. He was born in Melbourne to builder Henry Weedon and Emily Emery. He worked as a painter and decorator, eventually becoming managing partner of a photography studio. Around 1870 he married Emily Ellard, with whom he had one son; he would later marry Frances (Fanny) Dudley Cohen (née Miller) in 1896 and Florence Mary Maud McCarron around 1914. From 1899 to 1921 he served on Melbourne City Council, and was Lord Mayor from 1906 to 1908, in which year he was knighted. In 1907 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for East Melbourne. James Service
James Service (27 November 1823 – 12 April 1899), Australian colonial politician, was the 12th Premier of Victoria, Australia. Biography Service was born in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Robert Service. As a young man James worked in a Glasgow tea importing business, Thomas Corbett and Company. In 1853 he arrived in Melbourne as a company representative, and the following year went into business on his own forming James Service and Company, importers and wholesale merchants, which became a large and prosperous organization still in business many years after his death. He was a founding member of the Emerald Hill municipal council (now South Melbourne) in 1855, and of the Commercial Bank of Australia in 1866, going on to become a prominent banker and representative of Melbourne business interests. The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) lists places deemed to be of cultural heritage significance to the State of Victoria, Australia. It has statutory weight under the Heritage Act 2017. The Minister for Planning is the responsible Minister. Heritage Victoria was established as the State Government listing and permit authority in 1995, replacing the original authority, the Historic Buildings Preservation Council, established in 1974. Listing on the Victorian Heritage Register is separate from listing by a local Council or Shire, known as a Heritage Overlay. ''The Argus'' was an Australian daily morning newspaper in Melbourne from 2 June 1846 to 19 January 1957, and was considered to be the general Australian newspaper of record for this period. Widely known as a conservative newspaper for most of its history, it adopted a left-leaning approach from 1949. ''The Argus''s main competitor was David Syme's more liberal-minded newspaper, ''The Age''.
