Hemiodontichthys
''Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus'' is the only species of the monotypic genus ''Hemiodontichthys'', a genus of the family Loricariidae of catfish ( order Siluriformes). Taxonomy This taxon is often compared with the morphologically similar '' Reganella depressa''; ''Hemiodontichthys'' has been considered the sister genus of ''Reganella'' on the basis of osteological data. However, the similar external morphology of these two taxa could be interpreted as an evolutionary convergence, as they occupy the same ecological niche. In both, there is a rostrum and the loss of maxillary teeth; these could have evolved independently in different lineages subjected to similar environmental constraints. Considering some of the morphological characteristics of the two species, ''Hemiodontichthys'' is now believed to be part of the '' Loricariichthys'' group, while ''Reganella'' is part of the ''Pseudohemiodon'' group. Distribution ''Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus'' is native to the countries ...

Loricariichthys
''Loricariichthys'' is a genus of catfishes ( order Siluriformes) of the family Loricariidae. Taxonomy This genus is part of the ''Loricariichthys'' group within the subfamily Loricariinae; this group also includes the genera '' Furcodontichthys'', ''Hemiodontichthys'', '' Limatulichthys'', and '' Pseudoloricaria''. ''Loricariichthys'' seems to be intermediate between ''Limatulichthys'' and ''Pseudoloricaria'' on one hand, and ''Furcodontichthys'' and ''Hemiodontichthys'' on the other. Although this genus is well diagnosed, the species are very similar and difficult to identify. Species There are currently 18 recognized species in this genus: * '' Loricariichthys acutus'' (Valenciennes, 1840) * '' Loricariichthys anus'' (Valenciennes, 1835) * '' Loricariichthys brunneus'' (Hancock, 1828) * '' Loricariichthys cashibo'' ( C. H. Eigenmann & W. R. Allen, 1942) * '' Loricariichthys castaneus'' ( Castelnau, 1855) * '' Loricariichthys chanjoo'' ( Fowler, 1940) * '' Loricariichthys der ...

Loricariini
Loricariinae is a subfamily of the family Loricariidae of catfish (order Siluriformes). This subfamily is divided into two tribes and about 30 genera. They are mainly native to freshwater habitats in South America, but there are also several species (in genera '' Crossoloricaria'', '' Dasyloricaria'', '' Fonchiiichthys'', '' Rineloricaria'', '' Spatuloricaria'', ''Sturisoma'' and '' Sturisomatichthys'') in Panama and a single (''Fonchiiichthys'') in Costa Rica.Angulo; Garita-Alvarado; Bussing; and López (2013). Annotated checklist of the freshwater fishes of continental and insular Costa Rica: additions and nomenclatural revisions.'' Check List 9(5): 987–1019. Taxonomy Loricariinae was first described in 1831. Later, in 1979, many genera were described and Loricariinae was divided into four subfamilies: Loricariini, Harttiini, Farlowellini, and Acestridiini. Eventually, the genera of Acestridiini was included under Hypoptopomatinae and genera of Farlowellini was reclassified ...

Osteology
Osteology () is the scientific study of bones, practised by osteologists. A subdiscipline of anatomy, anthropology, and paleontology, osteology is the detailed study of the structure of bones, skeletal elements, teeth, microbone morphology, function, disease, pathology, the process of ossification (from cartilaginous molds), and the resistance and hardness of bones ( biophysics). Osteologists frequently work in the public and private sector as consultants for museums, scientists for research laboratories, scientists for medical investigations and/or for companies producing osteological reproductions in an academic context. Osteology and osteologists should not be confused with the pseudoscientific practice of osteopathy and its practitioners, osteopaths. Methods A typical analysis will include: * an inventory of the skeletal elements present * a dental inventory * aging data, based upon epiphyseal fusion and dental eruption (for subadults) and deterioration of the pubic ...

Fish Measurement
Fish measurement is the measuring of individual fish and various parts of their anatomies. These data are used in many areas of ichthyology, including taxonomy and fisheries biology. Overall length * Standard length (SL) is the length of a fish measured from the tip of the snout to the posterior end of the last vertebra or to the posterior end of the midlateral portion of the hypural plate. Simply put, this measurement excludes the length of the caudal (tail) fin. * Total length (TL) is the length of a fish measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the longer lobe of the caudal fin, usually measured with the lobes compressed along the midline. It is a straight-line measure, not measured over the curve of the body. Standard length measurements are used with Teleostei (most bony fish), while total length measurements are used with Myxini ( hagfish), Petromyzontiformes ( lampreys), and (usually) Elasmobranchii (shark Sharks are a group of elasmobranch fish characte ...

Paraguay River
The Paraguay River (Río Paraguay in Spanish, Rio Paraguai in Portuguese, Ysyry Paraguái in Guarani) is a major river in south-central South America, running through Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina. It flows about from its headwaters in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso to its confluence with the Paraná River north of Corrientes and Resistencia. Course The Paraguay's source is south of Diamantino in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. It follows a generally southwesterly course, passing through the Brazilian city of Cáceres. It then turns in a generally southward direction, flowing through the Pantanal wetlands, the city of Corumbá, then running close to the Brazil-Bolivia border for a short distance in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. From the city of Puerto Bahia Negra, Paraguay, the river forms the border between Paraguay and Brazil, flowing almost due south before the confluence with the Apa River. The Paraguay makes a long, gen ...

Oyapock River
The Oyapock or Oiapoque (; ; ) is a long river in South America that forms most of the border between the French overseas department of French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá. Course The Oyapock runs through the Guianan moist forests ecoregion. It rises in the Tumuk Humak () mountain range and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, where its estuary forms a large bay bordering on Cape Orange. The mouth of the Oyapock is the northern ''end'' of Brazil's coastline, as it is where the border between Brazil and French Guiana meets the ocean, but nearby Cape Orange, which separates the Bay of Oyapock from the Atlantic Ocean, is the northernmost ''point'' of the Brazilian coast. In Brazil, both the cape and the mouth of the Oyapock are often mistaken for the whole country's northernmost point (rather than just of its coastline), and in the past this information could even be found in geography schoolbooks. Yet the true northernmost point in Brazil is actually far inland, on Mo ...

Essequibo River
The Essequibo River ( Spanish: ''Río Esequibo'' originally called by Alonso de Ojeda ''Río Dulce'') is the largest river in Guyana, and the largest river between the Orinoco and Amazon. Rising in the Acarai Mountains near the Brazil–Guyana border, the Essequibo flows to the north for through forest and savanna into the Atlantic Ocean. With a total drainage basin of and an average discharge of . Territory near the river is argued over by Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela considers that the natural border according to the divortium aquarum that delimits the eastern margin of that country with the Cooperative Republic of Guyana is "by law", although due to the territorial dispute between the two countries for the sovereignty of Guayana Esequiba, it is "De facto administered and occupied for the most part by the former English colony of British Guiana, present-day Guyana. Geography The river runs through the Guianan moist forests ecoregion. The average annual rainfall in the c ...

Amazon Basin
The Amazon basin is the part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. The Amazon drainage basin covers an area of about , or about 35.5 percent of the South American continent. It is located in the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Most of the basin is covered by the Amazon rainforest, also known as Amazonia. With a area of dense tropical forest, this is the largest rainforest in the world.   Geography The Amazon River begins in the Andes Mountains at the west of the basin with its main tributary the Marañón River and Apurimac River in Peru. The highest point in the watershed of the Amazon is the second biggest peak of Yerupajá at . With a length of about before it drains into the Atlantic Ocean, it is one of the two longest rivers in the world. A team of scientists has claimed that the Amazon is longer than the Nile, but debate about its exact length continues. The Amazon s ...
