Hamar Women's Basketball
The Hamar women's basketball team, commonly known as Hamar, is the women's basketball department of Íþróttafélagið Hamar, based in the town of Hveragerði, Iceland. History The team was the runner-up to the 2010 national championship. The following season it posted the best record in the league. In May 2020, the club announced that they would field a joint women's team with Þór Þorlákshöfn in the 1. deild kvenna during the upcoming season. Hveragerði
Hveragerði (, "hot-spring yard") is a town and municipality in the south of Iceland, 45 km east of Reykjavík on Iceland's main ringroad, Route 1 (Iceland), Route 1. The river Varmá runs through the town. Overview The surrounding area is part of the Hengill central volcano, and is Geothermal (geology), geothermally active and experiences very frequent (usually minor) earthquakes. The town is known for its greenhouses, which are heated by hot water from volcanic hot springs. The first greenhouse was built in 1923. These springs are the site of occurrence of certain extremophile micro-organisms, that are capable of surviving in extremely hot environments. Close to the church is a hot spring called (, "sand hill hot-spring"), formed during the violent South Iceland earthquake of 1896. Guðbjörg Sverrisdóttir
Guðbjörg Sverrisdóttir (born 10 October 1992) is an Icelandic basketball player for Valur of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna. Career Guðbjörg came up through the junior teams of Haukar and played her first games with the senior team during the 2006-2007 season. In 2010, Guðbjörg helped Hamar to the Úrvalsdeild finals where they lost to KR in five games. On February 16, 2013, Guðbjörg dislocated her shoulder in the first half of Valur's Icelandic Cup finals game against Keflavík. She returned to the court in second half, after the team physician popped the shoulder back in the socket, and was a major catalyst in Valur's comeback to the game. However, with two minutes left of the third quarter, Guðbjörg ruptured her achilles tendon, and without her Keflavík won a narrow 68-60 victory. Lárus Jónsson
Lárus Jónsson (born 28 November 1978) is an Icelandic basketball coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of Þór Þorlákshöfn. As a player, he played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla and was a member of the Icelandic national team. In 2021 he led Þór Þorlákshöfn to its first ever national championship. Playing career Club career Lárus started his career with Hamar in Hveragerði and led the Úrvalsdeild karla in assists in 2003 and 2004. before signing with KR in 2004. Ágúst Sigurður Björgvinsson (born 16 January 1979) is an Icelandic professional basketball coach who last coached Úrvalsdeild karla (basketball), Úrvalsdeild karla club Valur men's basketball, Valur. He was the head coach of the Iceland women's national basketball team, Icelandic women's national basketball team from 2007 to 2009 and won back-to-back national championships with Haukar women's basketball, Haukar women's team in 2006 and 2007. Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir
Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir (born 23 November 1988) is an Icelandic former basketball player. During her career, she has won the Icelandic championship two times, in 2006 and 2007, and the Icelandic Basketball Cup four times. She is the Úrvalsdeild kvenna all-time career leader in rebounds and games played and in the league's top four in scoring, assists and steals. Playing career After coming up through the junior ranks of Skallagrímur, Sigrún started her senior career with Haukar in 2004, and helped the club to two national championships in 2006 and 2007. Slavica Dimovska
Slavica Nakov-Dimovska (born 29 July 1985) is a Macedonian basketball player and a former member of the Macedonian national basketball team. She won the Icelandic championship with Haukar in 2009 when she was named the Úrvalsdeild Foreign Player of the Year and the Úrvalsdeild Playoffs MVP. In 2010, she was named the Macedonian Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Career From 2005 to 2007, Dimovska played for Triglias in Greece. Kristrún Rut Hassing Antonsdóttir (born 12 October 1994) is an Icelandic multi-sport athlete. Fanney Lind Guðmundsdóttir Thomas (born 13 December 1989) is an Icelandic former basketball player. She is a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. Elín Sóley Hrafnkelsdóttir (born 16 September 1998) is an Icelandic basketball player who plays for Valur of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna. She debuted for the Icelandic national basketball team in 2016.
