Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir
Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir (born 23 November 1988) is an Icelandic former basketball player. During her career, she has won the Icelandic championship two times, in 2006 and 2007, and the Icelandic Basketball Cup four times. She is the Úrvalsdeild kvenna all-time career leader in rebounds and games played and in the league's top four in scoring, assists and steals. Playing career After coming up through the junior ranks of Skallagrímur, Sigrún started her senior career with Haukar in 2004, and helped the club to two national championships in 2006 and 2007. She joined KR prior the 2007-2008 season. She averaged 11.3 points and 11.3 rebounds for the season, helping KR to the second best record in the league. During the playoffs KR advanced to the Úrvalsdeild finals where it lost to Keflavík 0-3. Forward (basketball)
In the sport of basketball, there are five players play per team, each assigned to positions. Historically, these players have been assigned, to positions defined by the role they play on the court, from a strategic point of view. The three main positions are guard, forward, and center, with the standard team featuring two guards, two forwards, and a center. Icelandic Women's Basketball Company Cup
The Icelandic Women's Basketball Company Cup, commonly known as the Women's Company Cup (Icelandic: Fyrirtækjabikar kvenna), was an annual basketball competition between clubs in Iceland that was organized by the Icelandic Basketball Federation. It was Iceland's second-tier cup competition, and is not to be confused with Iceland's first-tier cup competition, the Icelandic Cup. History and format The Company Cup was founded in 2000 and its first edition, bearing the name ''Kjörísbikarinn'' after its sponsor ''Kjörís'', took place in December that year. It included all five Úrvalsdeild kvennaa teams and three teams from the second-tier 1. deild kvenna, with Keflavík, KFÍ, KR and ÍS advancing to the final four. Keflavík and KR went on to the Cup final where KR won 48-34. Its last edition to date was held in 2015 where Haukar defeated Keflavík in the Cup finals, 47-70. Guðrún Ósk Ámundadóttir
Guðrún Ósk Ámundadóttir (born 7 May 1987) is an Icelandic basketball basketball coach and player and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. As a player, she won the national championship twice and the Icelandic Cup five times. Club career After coming up through the junior programs of Skallagrímur, Guðrún started her senior team career with Haukar in 2003 and helped the team win two national championships and five Icelandic Cups. She played for KR from 2007 to 2009, winning the Icelandic Cup during her later season with the team. She returned to her hometown team of Skallagrímur in 2015. In her first game, she posted a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. In 2017 she helped Skallagrímur to the Cup finals where it eventually lost to Valur. Birna Valgarðsdóttir
Birna Ingibjörg Valgardsdóttir (born 19 January 1976) is an Icelandic former basketball player who won eight Icelandic championships, in a record twelve trips to the national finals, and five Icelandic Cups. She was named the Icelandic Female Basketball Player of the Year in 2002 and 2004. Birna was the second player to break the 5000 points barrier in Úrvalsdeild kvenna and is its all-time leading scorer. In December 2014, she broke the Úrvalsdeild kvenna all-time record for games played and held that record until March 2023, when it was broken by Sigrún Sjöfn Ámundadóttir. After difficult injuries during the later part of her career, Birna retired following the 2014-2015 season. ÍR Women's Basketball
The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur women's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the women's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland. History ÍR women's team was founded in 1950 and was one of the pioneers of women's basketball in Iceland as one of the founding members of the women's Icelandic women's championship tournament. It is also one of the most successful women's team in the country, winning a total of 11 national championships. After not fielding a team since being relegated from the Úrvalsdeild in 2004, the team was revived in 2017 and registered into Division I for the 2017-2018 season. On June 16, 2017, the club hired former player Ólafur Jónas Sigurðsson as the head coach of the team. Hildur Sigurðardóttir (born 15 October 1981) is an Icelandic basketball coach and player. She is the former head coach of Úrvalsdeild kvenna club Breiðablik and an assistant coach to the Icelandic women's national basketball team. As a player she won the Icelandic championship five times and the Icelandic Basketball Cup three times. Valur Women's Basketball
The Valur women's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur multi-sport club. In 2019, it won its first national championship. Recent history Valur played in the 2018 Úrvalsdeild finals, losing to Haukar 2-3. In April 2019, Valur won its first ever national championship when it beat Keflavík in the Úrvalsdeild finals 3-0. The team opened the 2019–20 season by defeating Keflavík, 105-81, in the annual Icelandic Super Cup. 2019–20 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2019–20 Úrvalsdeild kvenna is the 63rd season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 2 October 2019. On 13 March 2020 the season was postponed for at least four weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country. On 18 March, the rest of the season was canceled. Grindavík was relegated and Valur was named divisional champions for having the best record at the time of the cancelation but no national champions would be named for the season. Competition format The participating teams first play a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 28 games. The top four teams qualify for the championship playoffs whilst the bottom team will be relegated to 1. deild kvenna.
