Guðbjörg Sverrisdóttir
Guðbjörg Sverrisdóttir (born 10 October 1992) is an Icelandic basketball player for Valur of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna. Career Guðbjörg came up through the junior teams of Haukar and played her first games with the senior team during the 2006-2007 season. In 2010, Guðbjörg helped Hamar to the Úrvalsdeild finals where they lost to KR in five games. On February 16, 2013, Guðbjörg dislocated her shoulder in the first half of Valur's Icelandic Cup finals game against Keflavík. She returned to the court in second half, after the team physician popped the shoulder back in the socket, and was a major catalyst in Valur's comeback to the game. However, with two minutes left of the third quarter, Guðbjörg ruptured her achilles tendon, and without her Keflavík won a narrow 68-60 victory. Úrvalsdeild kvenna; English: Women's Premier League, known as Subway deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is the highest basketball competition among women's clubs in Iceland. The 2018–19 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 62nd season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 3 October 2018 and concluded on 27 April 2019 with Valur winning their first title after beating Keflavík 3–0 in the Úrvalsdeild finals. Competition format The participating teams first play a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 28 games. The Stjarnan women's basketball team, commonly known as Stjarnan, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, based in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. History In 2009, disgruntled Ármann players, unhappy with poor training facilities and lack of practice time, contacted Stjarnan and inquired if the board would be interested in starting a women's team. Helena Sverrisdóttir (born 11 March 1988) is an Icelandic former basketball player. Generally considered the greatest Icelandic female basketball player of all time, she was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year, Icelandic Women's Basketball Player of the Year 12 times. During her playing career, she won the Icelandic championship five times and the Slovak Women's Basketball Extraliga, Slovak championship two times.
