Hubert Allison Allen
Hubert Allison Allen (April 4, 1872 – May 14, 1942) was an American general who served during World War I. He is strongly associated with the Iowa National Guard. Early life Allen was born in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Joel Oliver Allen and Mary Jane (McGary) Allen. He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa in 1892. Military career On April 26, 1898 Allen enlisted with the 49th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He served in Havana, Cuba from December 19, 1898 to April 1899 where he took the surrender of and occupied the forts guarding Havana. While in Cuba, he was twice the provost-marshal of the Seventh Army Corps. In Savannah, Georgia, Allen was honorably discharged as a captain on May 13, 1899. Independence, Iowa
Independence is a city in, and the county seat of, Buchanan County, Iowa, United States. The population was 6,064 in the 2020 census, an increase from 6,014 in 2000. History Independence was founded in 1847 near the center of present-day Buchanan County. The original town plat was a simple nine-block grid on the east side of the Wapsipinicon River. The town was intended as an alternative to Quasqueton (then called Quasequetuk), which was the county seat prior to 1847. The village of Independence had fewer than 15 persons when the county seat was transferred there. On Main Street, on the west bank of the Wapsipinicon, a six-story grist mill was built in 1867. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on . The Knights of Pythias is the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order. The United Spanish War Veterans was an American veterans' organization which consisted of veterans of the Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War and China Relief Expedition. Origins Soon after the Spanish–American War ended, in early 1899, discharged veterans formed fraternal societies to keep in touch with their former comrades. Camp Cody (military Camp)
Camp Cody, located on the northwest side of Deming, New Mexico, was a World War I Army camp from 1916 to 1919. History During World War I, Camp Cody, commanded by Augustus P. Blocksom, was an army training camp for the National Guard units from North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Iowa. Soldiers received basic training there before leaving for the war in France. The different National Guard units together formed the 34th Infantry Division and were nicknamed the "Sandstorm Division," a name based on the camp's desert climate. Camp Cody was also built because of the threat of Mexican intervention in the first World War. Construction The camp was constructed during the summer of 1917 by the government.
