Hougomont (barque)
''Hougomont'' was the name of a four-masted steel barque built in Greenock, Scotland in 1897 by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. In 1924 she was purchased by Gustav Erikson's shipping company in Mariehamn, Åland, Finland. She was used for transport and schooling ship for young sailors until 1932 when a squall completely broke her rig on the Southern Ocean and she was sunk as breakwater near the town of Stenhouse Bay in South Australia. ' ''Hougomont'' had a crew of 24 men. The name "''Hougomont''" is derived from Château d'Hougoumont where the Battle of Waterloo was fought. While seaworthy she sailed to Peru, Florida, Canada, Australia, England, Ireland, and Sweden among other destinations. Gustaf Erikson
Gustaf Adolf Mauritz Erikson (1872, Lemland – 1947) was a ship-owner from Mariehamn, in the Åland islands. He was famous for the fleet of windjammers he operated to the end of his life, mainly on the grain trade from Australia to Europe. Erikson was involved in sailing for virtually his entire life. He went to sea at age 9, was commanding a sailing vessel in the North Sea trade by age 19, and was master of a number of square-rigged vessels before becoming an owner. His ships were bought cheaply as most shipping companies switched to steam ships about the turn of the century; Erikson would often acquire ships at shipbreakers prices. In the early 1920s there was still some competition for the windjammers sold – the shipping company F. Laeisz even ordered new sailing ships in the 1920s – but in the 1930s Erikson owned a significant share of the operational windjammers of the world. Cape Borda
Cape Borda is a headland in the Australian state of South Australia located in the gazetted locality of Cape Borda on the north west tip of Kangaroo Island about west of the municipal seat of Kingscote. Cape Horn
Cape Horn ( es, Cabo de Hornos, ) is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, and is located on the small Hornos Island. ''Archibald Russell'' was a tall ship built in 1905 by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Greenock, for John Hardie & Son, Glasgow. She was a four-masted steel barque, equipped with two 120' long bilge keels, and rigged with royal sails over double top-gallant sails. The ''Archibald Russell'' sailed the world delivering a variety of cargo (including timber, grain, nitrate, and coal) to various ports in the UK, Germany, Spain, Australia, Brazil and other countries. In 1923 she was sold for £5500 to Gustaf Erikson, who was famous for the fleet of windjammers he operated, mainly on the grain trade from Australia to Europe. A crewman on the vessel in 1929 was Australian journalist Ken Attiwill on a voyage from Melbourne to Ireland. He later wrote a book about the voyage.
