Henry Habibe
Frederick Hendrik (Henry) Habibe ( Aruba, 6 May 1940) is an Aruban poet, literary critic and literary man. He published his poetry mainly in the period following the creation of his magazine ''Watapana'' (1968–1972). He writes most of his poems in the Papiamento language, occasionally in Spanish and Dutch. In 1985 he received his PhD at the University of Leiden on the study ''El compromiso en la poesía afro-antillana de Cuba y Puerto Rico'', that treated Nicolás Guillén and other poets as its main subject. He also published studies on the work of Pierre Lauffer, JS Corsen and Luis Daal. He wrote reviews for the Antillian newspapers: ''Amigoe di Curacao'' and ''Beurs- en Nieuwsberichten'' (1986–1997). Henry Habib is a member of the advisory board of the Werkgroep Caraïbische Letteren (Caribbean Study group of Arts) of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (Society of Dutch Literature) in Leiden. Aruba
Aruba ( , , ), officially the Country of Aruba ( nl, Land Aruba; pap, Pais Aruba) is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands physically located in the mid-south of the Caribbean Sea, about north of the Venezuela peninsula of Paraguaná and northwest of Curaçao. Els Pelgrom (born 2 April 1934, Arnhem), pseudonym of Else Koch, is a Dutch writer of children's literature. Biography Career For some time she worked on the children's section of the ''Winschoter Courant''. She also worked for a short period of time as teacher. Children's literature Pelgrom made her debut as writer in 1962 with the book ''Het geheimzinnige bos''. Her book ''De kinderen van het achtste woud'' (1977) is considered by many to be her true debut. For this book she received the Gouden Griffel award in 1978. The book was translated into English as ''The Winter When Time Was Frozen'' by Maryka and Raphael Rudnik who won the Mildred L. Batchelder Award in 1981 for this translation. The book was translated into German by Jutta Knust as ''Die Kinder vom Achten Wald'' which was awarded the ''Gustav-Heinemann-Friedenspreis für Kinder- und Jugendbücher'' in 1983. Leiden
Leiden (; in English and archaic Dutch also Leyden) is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. The Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (English "Society of Dutch Literature", often abbreviated ''MNL'') is a prestigious and exclusive literary society. The MNL was established in Leiden in 1766 and is still located there. At the moment, the society has approximately 1,600 members, mainly (although not exclusively) Dutch scholars. New members can only be elected after they are introduced by existing members. Poetry (derived from the Greek ''poiesis'', "making"), also called verse, is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language − such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre − to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, a prosaic ostensible meaning. Pierre Lauffer
Pierre Lauffer (22 August 1920 – 14 June 1981) was a Curaçaoan writer and poet who mainly wrote in Papiamentu. He is considered one of the greatest poets of Curaçao. Biography Lauffer was born on 22 August 1920 as Pierre Antoine Lauffer. He graduated from the Mulo (junior high school) in 1936, and started various jobs as a civil servant, a military policeman, and an undertaker. During this time, he was writing stories and poetry as a hobby. His first publication was a story in Dutch for the magazine ''De Stoep''. In 1944 ''Patria'', his first poetry collection in Papiamentu, was published. It received a negative review from ''De Stoep'' who questioned the usefulness of a poetry book which a mere 100,000 people could read. In 1950, Lauffer co-founded the magazine ''Simadán'' written entirely in Papiamentu in order to compete with ''De Stoep''. The magazine would only have three editions.
