Harper Woods, Michigan
Harper Woods is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city had a population of 15,492 at the 2020 census. Harper Woods is a northeastern suburb of Metro Detroit and shares its southern and western border with the city of Detroit. It was incorporated as a city from the last remaining portion of Gratiot Township in 1951. Etymology According to the city's website, Harper Woods was so named because it was then a wooded area and because its main thoroughfare was Harper Avenue (named for Walter Harper, founder of Harper Hospital in Detroit). History Harper Woods was incorporated as a city on February 19, 1951, from what was left of Gratiot Township. Eastpointe
Eastpointe (formerly East Detroit) is a city on the southern edge of Macomb County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 32,442. Eastpointe forms a part of the Metro Detroit area. It borders 8 Mile Road on the northern edge of Detroit. History The community was first settled by Irish and German immigrants in the 1830s. In October 1897, a Post Office was established there with the name of "Half-way", as it was near the halfway point of the stage run between downtown Detroit and the Macomb County seat at Mount Clemens. It incorporated as the village of Halfway in December 1924 and reincorporated as the City of East Detroit in January 1929. Prior to 1924, most of the community formed a part of Erin Township. Monique Owens
Monique Owens (born February 21, 1984) is an American politician who is the first African-American mayor of Eastpointe, Michigan. She previously served on the Eastpointe City Council from 2017 to 2019. In 2022, Owens was named as a defendant in a federal lawsuit alleging that she violated the civil rights of four constituents by interrupting or censoring their remarks during public comment time at council meetings. In 2023, Owens was charged with false pretenses in 41B District Court, where she was accused of fraudulently applying for a COVID relief grant for one of her businesses. Owens was up for re-election as mayor in 2023 but failed to make it through the primary. Eastland Center was an enclosed shopping mall located in the city of Harper Woods, an inner-ring suburb of Detroit, Michigan, United States. Opened in 1957, the mall has been expanded several times since. K&G Fashion Superstore and Shoppers World serve as anchor stores, with four vacant anchors left by Sears, Target, Burlington, and Macy's. History The shopping center would have been Michigan's first shopping center constructed on 8 Mile and Kelly Road but the idea was scrapped. Interstate 94 (I-94) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from Billings, Montana, to the Lower Peninsula of the US state of Michigan. In Michigan, it is a state trunkline highway that enters the state south of New Buffalo and runs eastward through several metropolitan areas in the southern section of the state.
