Harmony, Maryland
Harmony is an unincorporated community in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. It is little more than an intersection of state Routes 16 and 578 on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Its original name was Fowling Creek, named after a stream nearby that is a tributary of the Choptank River. Harmony was the scene of a murder in 1895. There is a small country store with one gas pump, a church, a local produce stand, and farmland. While many of the farmers in the area are of German descent as can be seen in last names such as Mueller, Kraus, Thomas, Steenken, and Worm; they settled after the Civil War, filling the void of the men lost in the war. The older families of Towers, Todd, and Wyddel were the original settlers who came from England in the early eighteenth century, as can be confirmed from the original patents granted to them one of which is Wyddels Venture, the oldest century farm in the county. Caroline County, Maryland
Caroline County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of Maryland on its Eastern Shore. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,293. Its county seat is Denton. Caroline County is bordered by Queen Anne's County to the north, Talbot County to the west, Dorchester County to the south, Kent County, Delaware, to the east, and Sussex County, Delaware, to the southeast. History Caroline County was created via 1773 Maryland General Assembly legislation from parts of Dorchester and Queen Anne's counties. The county derives its name from Lady Caroline Eden, wife of Maryland's last colonial governor, Robert Eden. Maryland
Maryland ( ) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Maryland Route 16
Maryland Route 16 (MD 16) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs from Taylors Island east to the Delaware state line in Hickman, where the highway continues as Delaware Route 16 (DE 16). MD 16 connects Cambridge with several communities in northern Dorchester County and southwestern Caroline County, including East New Market and Preston. The state highway runs concurrently with U.S. Route 50 (US 50) near Cambridge, MD 331 between East New Market and Preston, and both MD 404 and MD 313 near Andersontown. Maryland Route 578
Maryland Route 578 (MD 578) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Bethlehem Road, the state highway runs from Maryland Route 331, MD 331 at Bethlehem, Maryland, Bethlehem east to Maryland Route 16, MD 16 at Harmony, Maryland, Harmony. The first segment of MD 578 was completed in the mid-1930s; the remainder was built in the early 1940s. Route description MD 578 begins at an intersection with MD 331 (Dover Bridge Road) in Bethlehem. Bethlehem Road continues south as a county highway. MD 578 heads northeast as a two-lane undivided road through farmland. After passing Newton Road, the state highway crosses Hog Creek. MD 578 meets its eastern terminus at MD 16 (Harmony Road) in the unincorporated village of Harmony. History MD 578 was paved by 1935 from Bethlehem to Newton Road. Maryland's Eastern Shore
The Eastern Shore of Maryland is a part of the U.S. state of Maryland that lies mostly on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay. Nine counties are normally included in the region. The Eastern Shore is part of the larger Delmarva Peninsula that Maryland shares with Delaware and Virginia. As of the 2010 census, its population was 449,226, with just under 8% of Marylanders living in the region – less populous than the city of Baltimore. Fowling Creek
Fowling is the hunting of birds by humans, for food (meat), feathers or any other commercially value products, or simply for leisure ("sporting") or collecting trophies. It is comparable to wildfowling, the practice of hunting waterfowls for food or sport. The term is perhaps better known in the Fens of Eastern England than elsewhere, but was certainly not confined to the Fens. The land margins of the north produced down feathers from eider duck for eiderdowns and quilted jackets without necessarily killing the birds. In the Western Isles of Scotland, seabirds were taken from their nests on cliffs. In The Fens and other similar places, a decoy was part of a landowner's well-equipped estate. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States.
