Haidao Township
Haidao Township () is an insular township off the Asian mainland in Xiapu County, Ningde, Fujian, China (PRC). The township is immediately north of present-day Lienchiang County (the Matsu Islands), ROC (Taiwan). History On December 15, 1950, the Matsu Administrative Office () of Fujian Province, Republic of China was established including modern-day Lienchiang County (the Matsu Islands), ROC (Taiwan) as well as islands in present-day Haidao Township including the Sishuang Islands (), Xiyang (), and Fuying () as well as Taishan () in present-day Shacheng, Fuding. On December 29, 1950, the Daxiyang Island was attacked by Chinese Communist forces and defended by guerrilla forces. On July 27, 1951, ten motorized with over four hundred Chinese Communist soldiers attacked Xiyang Island. More than sixty guerrilla soldiers defending the island died. Township (China)
Townships (), formally township-level divisions (), are the basic level (fourth-level administrative units) of political divisions in China. They are similar to municipalities and communes in other countries and in turn may contain village committees and villages. In 1995 there were 29,502 townships and 17,532 towns (a total of 47,034 township-level divisions) in China. Much like other levels of government in mainland China, the township's governance is divided between the Communist Party Township Secretary, and the " county magistrate" (). Beigan, Lienchiang
Beigan Township (; Foochow Romanized: Báe̤k-găng-hiŏng), is an insular rural township in Lienchiang County (the Matsu Islands), Taiwan (ROC). The township is in the East China Sea off the coast of Fujian Province, China near Fuzhou (Foochow). Beigan Island, the main island of the township, is the second largest island in the Matsu Islands. Other smaller islands in the township include Daqiu Island, known for its Formosan sika deer, and Gaodeng Island and Liang Island which are off-limits to the public. Liang Island (Larne Island, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) (; Foochow Romanized: Liông-dō̤, originally , Lang Tao ) is an island located in the East China Sea in Beigan Township, Lienchiang County (the Matsu Islands), Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). The island is closed to the public. The Army Map Service (AMS) was the military cartography, cartographic agency of the United States Department of Defense from 1941 to 1968, subordinated to the United States Army Corps of Engineers. ''The Chinese Repository'' was a periodical published in Canton between May 1832 and 1851 to inform Protestant missionaries working in Asia about the history and culture of China, of current events, and documents. The world's first major journal of Sinology, it was the brainchild of Elijah Coleman Bridgman, the first American Protestant missionary appointed to China. ''Matsu Daily'' () is a newspaper owned by the government of the Lienchiang County, Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). It was founded as ''Tengpu Daily'' (), a newspaper published to the military on Tengpu Island, to commemorate the victory of Tengpu Battle. Following the later retreat to Matsu, the newspaper continued to be published. ''Matsu Daily'' started to be published on 3 September 1957.
