Gort GAA
Gort GAA Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club located in Gort, County Galway, Ireland. Founded at the turn of the 20th century, the club is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. The club competes in Galway GAA competitions, and has won the Galway Senior Hurling Club Championship and Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship on several occasions. History While hurling has been played in Gort since at least the formation of the GAA in the 1880s, the modern club was formed at the turn of the 20th century. The club won its first Galway Senior Hurling Championship (Galway SHC) in 1914, going on to win several other titles. Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sports, amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. John Commins (hurler)
John Commins (born 26 September 1965) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a goalkeeper for the Galway senior team. Born on 26 September in Gort, County Galway, Commins first arrived on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Galway minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1986 championship. Commins went on to play a key role for Galway for the next few years, and won two All-Ireland medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team at various times, Commins won two Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a one-time Connacht medallist with Gort. In addition to this he also won one championship medal. Commins's retirement came following the conclusion of the 1990 championship. Sylvester Linnane (born 29 December 1956) is an Irish retired 3 time All-Star winning hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Galway senior team. Born in Gort, County Galway, Linnane first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team, before later joining the under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the 1976 championship. Linnane went on to play a key role for Galway for over a decade, and won three All-Ireland medals and two National Hurling League medals. Greg Lally (born 7 February 1988) is an Irish hurler who currently plays as a midfielder for the Galway senior team. Born in Gort, County Galway, Lally first played competitive hurling in his youth. He was a key member of the Gort Community School senior team. At club level he is a two-time championship medallist with Gort. Lally made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team who won the 2005 All Ireand. Thomas Helebert (born 1964) is an Irish former hurler and former selector of the Galway senior hurling management team, who played as a right wing-back for the Galway senior team. Aidan Harte (born 17 August 1988) is an Irish hurler who plays for Galway Senior Championship Gort and previously at inter-county level with the Galway senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a left wing-back. Playing career Gort Harte joined the Gort club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels. Josie Gallagher
Josie Gallagher (1923 – September 1998) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Gort and with the Galway senior inter-county team from 1942 until 1954. Playing career Club Gallagher played his club hurling with his local club in Gort, however, he enjoyed little success. His playing days coincided with a downturn in the club's fortunes. Inter-county Gallagher first came to prominence with the Galway senior inter-county team in the 1940s. Galway hurling was in the doldrums at the time.
