Geulle
Geulle (; li, Gäöl ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Meerssen, about 8 km southwest of Geleen. History The village was first mentioned in 1298 as Gole, and refers to the Geul River which used to flow past the village until the Maas moved two kilometres westwards in the early 15th century. Geulle developed in the Middle Ages at the former confluence of the Geul with the Maas. In 1375, it became part of the . In 1839, it became part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Between 1931 and 1934, the Juliana Canal was dug and the village was split in two parts: Guelle and . The St Martinus Church was first mentioned in 1298. The tower contains 14th century elements, and received its current height and shape in 1810. In 1920, the nave was demolished and a new church was built in its place. Meerssen (; li, Meersje ) is a town and a municipality in southeastern Netherlands. History The Treaty of Meerssen was signed in Meerssen in 870. The Treaty of Meerssen was an agreement of the division of the Carolingian Empire by the surviving sons of Louis I, Charles II of the West Franks and Louis the German of East Franks. Around the middle of the 10th century the allodium Meerssen was the property of queen Gerberga, the daughter of king Henry I. She was the spouse of Louis IV of France. In 968 she donated all her property to the abbey of Saint Remigius in Reims. Lars Schenk (born 16 January 2002) is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Eerste Divisie club MVV. Career Schenk started playing football with Geulsche Boys alongside his nephew and future MVV teammate, Tim Zeegers. Both joined the MVV academy later on. Joan Van Der Mey
Joan (Jo) Melchior van der Mey (19 August 1878, Delfshaven – 6 June 1949, Geulle) was a Dutch architect best known for the landmark Scheepvaarthuis (Shipping House) building in Amsterdam located at Prins Hendrikkade, 1912. Van der Mey was a student of Eduard Cuypers from 1898, won the Dutch Prix de Rome in 1906; he was taken on by the city of Amsterdam as an "Aesthetic Advisor". In 1905 Amsterdam was the first city in the world to impose a building code, and later they hired van der Mey as their civic building artist. In this capacity he developed the facade for the 1912 Palm House at the Hortus Botanicus among other buildings. That same year brought the commission for the Scheepvaarthuis, a large cooperative building for six Dutch shipping companies. Wil Jacobs (born 7 June 1960) is a Dutch retired handball player. Career Jacobs started playing handball at the age of 14 at Vlug en Lenig. As a youth international, he participated in the Junior World Championships in 1979 (Denmark) and 1981 (Portugal). Jacobs made his debut in the national team on 28 March 1980 in Aarau against Switzerland (26-14 loss). The B-World Cup in France in 1981 was his first major tournament, finishing in tenth place. The Juliana Canal (Dutch and Limburgish: , , ), named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, is a 36 km long canal in the southern Netherlands, providing a bypass of an unnavigable section of the river Meuse between Maastricht and Maasbracht. It is an important transport connection between the ports of the Rhine delta and the industrial areas of southern Limburg and southern Belgium.
