Greek Rugby League Association
The Greek Rugby League Federation (GRLF), formerly Greek Rugby League Association (GRLA), has been governing body for the sport of rugby league football in Greece since 2017. Officially eecognised as Federation from the Greek Ministry of Sports in August 2022. History The GRLA was formed in 2017 following the expulsion of the Hellenic Federation of Rugby League from the Rugby League European Federation (now European Rugby League) the previous year. The body was accorded observer status with the RLEF in March 2017, and affiliate status in March 2018. In August 2022 the GRLA was finally recognised as the official body for the sport from the Greek state and received the national federation status. This recognition brought to an end the situation where the national team played 'home' fixtures abroad or in secret. European Rugby League
The European Rugby League (ERL) is the umbrella body for nations playing the sport of rugby league football across Europe. In the absence of other continental federations, ERL also controls rugby league in North America (including Central America), the Middle East and Africa. History 2003-2019 The federation was founded January 2003 following an initiative between Richard Lewis, Executive Chairman of Britain's Rugby Football League (RFL) and his French counterpart Jean Paul Ferre. The RLEF's first constitution was approved in January 2004 and the federation's first Board of Directors was elected. This first Board of Directors consisted of Jean Paul Ferre as President/Chairman and Richard Lewis as Deputy Chairman with Nigel Wood and Nicolas Larrat being the other Board members. Steve Georgallis (Greek: Στυλιανός Γεωργάλλης; born 17 June 1968) is a Greek professional rugby league football coach who is the head coach of Greece, an assistant coach for the North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL and former professional rugby league footballer. A half or , he played for the Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Western Suburbs Magpies and the Wests Tigers, as well as in England for Carlisle, Wakefield Trinity and the Warrington Wolves. Hellenic Federation Of Rugby League
The Hellenic Federation of Rugby League, or simply Hellas Rugby League, was the governing body for the sport of rugby league football in Greece between 2013 and 2016. The association was founded in 2013 by Anastasios "Tasos" Pantazidis. The body was accorded observer status within the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF) in August 2013, and affiliate status in February 2014. In April 2016, the HFRL was suspended from the RLEF following a year-long investigation for "wilfully acting in a manner prejudicial to the interests of the RLEF and international rugby league." The HRFL was expelled from the RLEF in August 2016 for failing to meet membership requirements. The HFRL continues to operate in Greece, and gained recognition by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in July 2017 as part of the Hellenic Federation of Modern Pentathlon. Greece Women's National Rugby League Team
The Greece women's national rugby league team represents Greece in women's rugby league football. Founded in 2019 by the Greek Rugby League Association, the team played its first game in September 2019 in a friendly match against Turkey. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the politics surrounding the governance of rugby league in Greece the team did not play its first full (as opposed to a friendly) international match until September 2022, when they entered the Southern group of the 2022 Rugby League Women's European Championship B. The first home international match took place at Gorytsa Park field, Aspropyrgos on 2 October 2022. Aspropyrgos ( el, Ασπρόπυργος) is a suburb of Athens, and a municipality in the West Attica regional unit, Attica, Greece. The municipality had a population of 30,251 at the 2011 census. Rugby league is a team sport that is relatively new to Greece. History The Greek national team was formed in 2003 by Greek Australians. Rugby league was subsequently introduced to Greece in 2006. The first match played in Greece was contested by the Olympus Eels and Attica Tigers, with the teams consisting of a mixture of local rugby union players and Greek Australians. The team has been participating in international competition since 2003, and have qualified for their first Rugby League World Cup, to be held in 2022.
