Greatest Hits Radio South Yorkshire was a local radio station serving South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. The station was folded into Greatest Hits Radio Yorkshire, as part of a rebrand, on 1 September 2020. Technical The station broadcast on three separate frequencies, 990 kHz in Doncaster, 1305 kHz in Barnsley and 1548 kHz in Sheffield. History The station was created when Radio Hallam split its FM and medium wave frequencies to provide two different services. The AM station became "Classic Gold", then "Classic Gold Radio", "Great Yorkshire Gold" and "Great Yorkshire Radio". The original incarnation was owned by The Yorkshire Radio Network who were then taken over by Metro Radio group before being bought by EMAP in 1996. At the start of 1997, Emap decided to scrap the regional Classic Gold station and replaced it with local stations under the brandname of ''Magic'', with a new format of Hot Adult Contemporary music. Yorkshire Radio Network
The Yorkshire Radio Network was a group of three radio stations which shared programmes in the evening and at weekends. YRN was made-up of Pennine Radio (radio station), Pennine Radio in Bradford, 96.9 Viking FM, Viking Radio in Kingston upon Hull, Hull and Hallam FM, Radio Hallam in Sheffield. History YRN was based at Hartshead in Sheffield at Radio Hallam, although all of the live programmes came from Studio 2 at Viking Radio in Hull. The company came about when Radio Hallam merged with Pennine Radio and later took over Viking Radio and the Yorkshire Radio Network began broadcasting on 18 May 1987. In 1989 all of the three radio stations' medium wave frequencies were used to form a new service called Classic Gold. YRN was bought by the Metro Radio group and as Pennine was making a loss they decided to rename it and in August 1991 The Pulse of West Yorkshire was born. Greatest Hits Radio North East is a local radio broadcasting, radio station serving North East England, as part of Bauer Radio, Bauer’s Greatest Hits Radio network. History Great North Radio (also known as G.N.R) was formed in March 1989 using the AM broadcasting, AM frequencies of Metro Radio and Radio Tees. This happened after the Metro Radio group decided to split the FM and AM frequencies up. GNR's output consisted of mellow music from the 1950s through to the 1980s, including current hits that fitted the format.
