Glory Leppänen
Glory Leppänen ( Renvall; 28 November 1901 — 26 October 1979) was a Finnish actress, theatre and film director, and writer. She was the first Finnish woman film director. Personal life Glory Renvall was born in Paris to a wealthy Finnish family. Her mother was the internationally-renowned operatic soprano Aino Ackté, and her father the lawyer, business executive and ''Senaattori'' (ie. Minister) Heikki Renvall. There have been persistent rumours that her biological father was the Finnish painter Albert Edelfelt, with whom her mother may have had an affair in Paris, but Glory Renvall herself has always insisted that her father is Heikki Renvall. In 1924, Glory Renvall married the actor , but he died in 1937 at the relatively young age of 43. The Order of the Lion of Finland ( fi, Suomen Leijonan ritarikunta; sv, Finlands Lejons orden) is one of three official orders in Finland, along with the Order of the Cross of Liberty and the Order of the White Rose of Finland. The President of Finland is the Grand Master of all three orders. The orders are administered by boards consisting of a chancellor, a vice-chancellor and at least four members. Ester Toivonen (August 7, 1914 Hamina — December 29, 1979 Helsinki) was elected Miss Finland in 1933. She was 19 and working in a bread shop in Helsinki when she was discovered by the director of the Helsinki Golf-Casino, where the Finnish pageant was to be held. Miss Europe
Miss Europe is a beauty pageant for European women from all over Europe. It was established in February 1927 by Fanamet, the European distributor of Paramount, as a one-off event where the winner was to star in a film directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. After the initial twelve-person jury couldn't decide between 10 contestants, a runoff election was held where Murnau chose the winner. Murnau ended up choosing Štefica Vidačić of Yugoslavia as the winner and the first ever Miss Europe. Miss Europe was later re-established in December 1928 by French journalist Maurice de Waleffe (1874–1946), who also created, in 1920, what by 1927 had become the Miss France pageant. Onnenpotku
''Onnenpotku'' (Swedish: ''Lyckosparken''; 'A Stroke of Luck') is a 1936 romantic comedy, notable for being the first feature-length Finnish film by a female director. Background The film is based on an earlier Swedish one, titled ' (1934). The project was started by director and producer Erkki Karu, but when he suddenly died in December 1935, a replacement was needed to continue the work. The production company's CEO Toivo Särkkä would have been the obvious choice, but he declined on the basis of lack of directing experience. Instead, the project was given to Glory Leppänen, who had many years' experience as an actor and also some as a stage director. She did, however, have something most of the directors at the time lacked: formal training in direction, having attended a course at ''Regieseminar Max Reinhardt'' in Vienna.
