Georgy Agzamov
Georgy Tadzhikhanovich Agzamov (September 6, 1954, Tashkent – August 27, 1986, Sevastopol) was a Soviet chess Grandmaster, the first from Central Asia. He became an International Master in 1982 and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1984. Career In 1966, at the age of 12, he was the chess champion of his town of Almalyk (Olmaliq) in the province of Tashkent of central Uzbekistan. In 1971, he took 2nd place in the USSR Junior Chess Championship, held in Riga. In 1973, he played in his first Uzbekistani chess championship. He won the event in 1976 and 1981. He was the first Grandmaster from Uzbekistan in 1984. He was a philologist. Best results include first place at Belgrade 1982; 1st at Vršac 1983; 1st at Sochi 1984; 1st at Tashkent 1984; 1st at Bogotá 1984; 2nd at Potsdam 1985; 1st at Calcutta 1986. Olmaliq
Olmaliq ( uz, Olmaliq / Олмалиқ, russian: Алмалык, Almalyk) is a district-level city (2021 pop 133,400) in the Tashkent Region of central Uzbekistan, approximately 65 km east of Tashkent. It is located at latitude 40° 50' 41N; longitude 69° 35' 54E; at an altitude of 585 meters. Olmaliq is a company town developed by the Soviet Union in the 1930s, to exploit local reserves of copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver and barite. The town contains several enormous smelting facilities and related industries operated today by JSC Almalyk MMC, one of the largest mining-metallurgical enterprises in Uzbekistan. The smelter operations have extensively contaminated Almalyk, which is considered one of the most polluted places on earth. The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system, but is also used as a rating system in association football, American football, baseball, basketball, pool, table tennis, and various board games and esports. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins.
