George Lignac
George Otto Emil Lignac (30 August 1891 – 5 September 1954) was a Dutch pathologist-anatomist. Lignac was born in Passoeroean, Java, Dutch East Indies, where his father worked as a civil servant. He studied medicine at Leiden and then returned to the Dutch East Indies and was a teacher at the STOVIA (''School tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen'' or "school for the training of Indian physicians") in Batavia. He returned to the Netherlands and was appointed professor of pathology, general diseases, pathological anatomy, and juridical medicine in Leiden in 1934. He published work on skin pigmentation, cysteine metabolism and the carcinogenic nature of benzol and many more. The Abderhalden–Kaufmann–Lignac syndrome is named for Emil Abderhalden, Eduard Kaufmann Eduard Kaufmann (24 March 1860, Bonn – 15 December 1931, Göttingen) was a German physician. Cysteine (symbol Cys or C; ) is a semiessential proteinogenic amino acid with the formula . The thiol side chain in cysteine often participates in enzymatic reactions as a nucleophile. When present as a deprotonated catalytic residue, sometimes the symbol Cyz is used. The deprotonated form can generally be described by the symbol Cym as well. Fanconi Syndrome
Fanconi syndrome or Fanconi's syndrome (, ) is a syndrome of inadequate reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules of the kidney. The syndrome can be caused by various underlying congenital or acquired diseases, by toxicity (for example, from toxic heavy metals), or by adverse drug reactions. It results in various small molecules of metabolism being passed into the urine instead of being reabsorbed from the tubular fluid (for example, glucose, amino acids, uric acid, phosphate, and bicarbonate). Fanconi syndrome affects the proximal tubules, namely, the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), which is the first part of the tubule to process fluid after it is filtered through the glomerulus, and the proximal straight tubule (pars recta), which leads to the descending limb of loop of Henle. Eduard Kaufmann
Eduard Kaufmann (24 March 1860, Bonn – 15 December 1931, Göttingen) was a German physician. The disease Abderhalden–Kaufmann–Lignac syndrome is named for him. Career Kaufmann studied in Bonn and Berlin, and earned his doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1884. He was appointed privatdozent for anatomical pathology in Breslau three years later, and assisted at Emil Ponfick’s institute. In 1896 Kaufmann became prosector at Allerheiligenhospital in Breslau and professor in 1897. In 1898 he became professor of pathology and anatomical pathology and head of the Pathological Anatomical Institute of the University of Basel. Emil Abderhalden
Emil Abderhalden (9 March 1877 – 5 August 1950) was a Swiss biochemist and physiologist. His main findings, though disputed already in the 1910s, were not finally rejected until the late 1990s. Whether his misleading findings were based on fraud or simply the result of a lack of scientific rigor remains unclear. Abderhalden's drying pistol, used in chemistry, was first described by one of his students in a textbook Abderhalden edited. Abderhalden–Kaufmann–Lignac syndrome (AKL syndrome), also called nephropathic cystinosis, is an autosomal recessive renal disorder of childhood comprising cystinosis and renal rickets. Presentation Affected children are developmentally delayed with dwarfism, rickets and osteoporosis. Renal tubular disease is usually present causing aminoaciduria, glycosuria and hypokalemia.
