Galetta is a dispersed rural community in West Carleton-March Ward in rural western Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Mississippi River near its mouth in the Ottawa River. Once part of Fitzroy Township and later West Carleton, it is now part of the city of Ottawa. According to the Canada 2011 Census, the population of Galetta's Dissemination Area was 545, which also includes nearby communities Vydon Acres, Marshall Bay and part of Mohr Corners. History The area was first settled in 1823. It was originally named Hubbell's Falls after James Hubbell. The Post Office was established in 1850, and was kept at Riddle's or Mohr's Corners, James Riddle served as postmaster in 1866. By 1866, Hubbell's Falls was a village with a population of about 200 in the township of Fitzroy, on the Mississippi river. The river here has a fall of twenty feet. West Carleton-March Ward
West Carleton-March Ward (Ward 5) is a city ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The ward was created for the 2000 election when West Carleton Township was amalgamated into the new city of Ottawa. At that time, the ward was called West Carleton Ward. It consisted of the former West Carleton Township. In 2006, the boundaries were altered, and the ward was given its present name. Its southern border became Highway 7 and the Queensway and it lost some areas in the southeastern part of the ward. The ward also added the rural northern portion of the former city of Kanata. Its population in 2006 was 23,400 – the second least populated ward. Its area is 763 km², the largest city ward. Mississippi River (Ontario)
The Mississippi River is a tributary of the Ottawa River in Eastern Ontario, Canada which has no relation with the Mississippi River in the United States. It is in length from its source at Mackavoy Lake, has a drainage area of , and has a mean discharge of . There are more than 250 lakes in the watershed. Fitzroy is a former incorporated and present day geographic township (Canada)#Ontario, township originally part of Carleton County, Ontario, Carleton County in eastern Ontario, Canada. West Carleton Township
West Carleton was a township municipality in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It was located in the rural parts of what is now the City of Ottawa, west of Kanata. Its northern boundary was the Ottawa River. The township was created in 1974 with the amalgamation of three townships: Torbolton, Fitzroy, and Huntley. In 2001 it was amalgamated with Cumberland, Gloucester, Goulbourn, Kanata, Nepean, Osgoode, Ottawa, Rideau, Rockcliffe Park and Vanier to form the new city of Ottawa. James Steen (reeve)
James Steen (died 1862) was an Irish-born farmer and politician in Ontario. He served as the first reeve of Fitzroy Township, Ontario from 1850 to 1854. He came to Canada in 1818, settling in Drummond township. Steen later moved near the village of Pakenham. He subsequently returned to Ireland to marry Rose Ann McKibbon, returning to Upper Canada with his new bride. In 1831, Steen moved again to a new location, soon known as Steen's Falls, near the current town of Galetta and built a mill on the Mississippi River there. After Dr. Hubbell was able to purchase the water rights for that location, Steen moved down river and built a grist mill, shingle mill and lumber mill.
