Franske Islands
Franske Islands, da, Franske Øer, french: Iles Françaises; meaning 'French Islands', is a group of uninhabited islands of the Greenland Sea, Greenland. Administratively the islands belong to the Northeast Greenland National Park. Geography The Franske Islands lie off Jokel Bay, northeastern Greenland, just east of Schnauder Island and the Achton Friis Islands , between the Norske Islands to the north and the Danske Islands to the south. There are seven large islands in the group, as well as numerous smaller islands and islets. The Duke of Orléans Arctic Expedition had given the name ''"Iles Françaises" to a group further south in 1905. A few years later the Denmark Expedition transferred the name to the northernmost islands that the French expedition could have explored and named the group south of the Pariserøerne "Danske Islands". Greenland Sea
The Greenland Sea is a body of water that borders Greenland to the west, the Svalbard archipelago to the east, Fram Strait and the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Norwegian Sea and Iceland to the south. The Greenland Sea is often defined as part of the Arctic Ocean, sometimes as part of the Atlantic Ocean. However, definitions of the Arctic Ocean and its seas tend to be imprecise or arbitrary. In general usage the term "Arctic Ocean" would exclude the Greenland Sea. In oceanographic studies the Greenland Sea is considered part of the Nordic Seas, along with the Norwegian Sea. The Nordic Seas are the main connection between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans and, as such, could be of great significance in a possible shutdown of thermohaline circulation. Northeast Greenland National Park
Northeast Greenland National Park ( kl, Kalaallit Nunaanni nuna eqqissisimatitaq, da, Grønlands Nationalpark) is the world's largest national park and the 10th List of largest protected areas in the world, largest protected area (the only larger protected areas all consist mostly of sea). Jokel Bay
Jokel Bay ( da, Jøkelbugten) is a large bay in North Eastern Greenland. The area of the bay is uninhabited. Administratively Jokel Bay and its surroundings belong to the Northeast Greenland National Park. The bay was named after an old Norse word for glacier — is, Jökull— by the ill-fated Denmark expedition. Jokel Bay is clogged by fast ice the year round. Geography Jokel Bay stretches for about 140 kilometers from north to south in the King Frederick VIII Land shore. The Achton Friis Islands ( da, Achton Friis Øer) are a group of two uninhabited islands in the Greenland Sea, Greenland. They were named by the Denmark expedition in honor of illustrator Achton Friis, one of the expedition members. Geography The Achton Friis Islands lie northeast of Jokel Bay, northeastern Greenland. Name conflict This island group was named by John Haller during the 1956–1958 Expedition to East Greenland led by Lauge Koch, to pay tribute to the work of the 1906–08 Denmark expedition. Previously the Duke of Orléans in 1905 had given the name "Îles Françaises" to an island group further north, approximating to the position of the present Franske Islands. Denmark Expedition
The Denmark expedition ( da, Danmark-ekspeditionen), also known as the Denmark Expedition to Greenland's Northeast Coast, and as the Danmark Expedition after the ship, was an expedition to the northeast of Greenland in 1906–1908. Despite being overshadowed by the death in tragic circumstances of the main exploration team, including three of the expedition's leading members: Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872–1907), Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (1877–1907) and Jørgen Brønlund (1877–1907), the Denmark expedition was not a failure.
