Danske Islands
Danske Islands, da, Danske Øer; meaning 'Danish Islands', is an island group of the Greenland Sea, NE Greenland. The islands are uninhabited. Administratively they belong to the Northeast Greenland National Park. Name conflict This island group was named by John Haller during the 1956–1958 Expedition to East Greenland led by Lauge Koch, to pay tribute to the work of the 1906–08 Denmark expedition. Previously the Duke of Orléans in 1905 had given the name "Îles Françaises" to an island group further north, approximating to the position of the present Franske Islands. A few years later the 1906–08 Denmark expedition had transferred the name "Franske Islands" to that position, corresponding to the northernmost islands the Duke of Orléans Arctic Expedition could have seen. Greenland Sea
The Greenland Sea is a body of water that borders Greenland to the west, the Svalbard archipelago to the east, Fram Strait and the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Norwegian Sea and Iceland to the south. The Greenland Sea is often defined as part of the Arctic Ocean, sometimes as part of the Atlantic Ocean. However, definitions of the Arctic Ocean and its seas tend to be imprecise or arbitrary. In general usage the term "Arctic Ocean" would exclude the Greenland Sea. In oceanographic studies the Greenland Sea is considered part of the Nordic Seas, along with the Norwegian Sea. The Nordic Seas are the main connection between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans and, as such, could be of great significance in a possible shutdown of thermohaline circulation. Jokel Bay
Jokel Bay ( da, Jøkelbugten) is a large bay in North Eastern Greenland. The area of the bay is uninhabited. Administratively Jokel Bay and its surroundings belong to the Northeast Greenland National Park. The bay was named after an old Norse word for glacier — is, Jökull— by the ill-fated Denmark expedition. Jokel Bay is clogged by fast ice the year round. Geography Jokel Bay stretches for about 140 kilometers from north to south in the King Frederick VIII Land shore. Lambert Land and Schnauder Island lie at the northern end by the Zachariae Isstrom glacier, while Duke of Orleans Land and Gamma Island are at the southern end. World Aeronautical Chart
A World Aeronautical Chart (WAC) is a type of aeronautical chart used for navigation by pilots of moderate speed aircraft and aircraft at high altitudes. They are at a scale of 1:1,000,000 (about 1 inch = 13.7 nautical miles or 16 statute miles). These charts are similar to sectional charts, and the symbols are the same. However, there is less detail at the smaller scale, so it is seldom used for visual flight rules flight at slower speeds or for local flights. WACs show topographic information, airports and radio navigational aids. They are useful for strategic flight planning, where a view of the entire flight area is useful. These charts are revised annually, except for several Alaskan charts and the Mexican/ Caribbean charts which are revised every 2 years. Australian WAC charts are amended every 3 to 5 years. The Denmark expedition ( da, Danmark-ekspeditionen), also known as the Denmark Expedition to Greenland's Northeast Coast, and as the Danmark Expedition after the ship, was an expedition to the northeast of Greenland in 1906–1908. Despite being overshadowed by the death in tragic circumstances of the main exploration team, including three of the expedition's leading members: Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872–1907), Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (1877–1907) and Jørgen Brønlund (1877–1907), the Denmark expedition was not a failure.
