Lusophone Games
The Lusofonia Games ( pt, Jogos da Lusofonia) is a multinational multi-sport event organized by the ACOLOP, which involves athletes coming from Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) countries. Most countries competing are countries that are members of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries), but some are countries with significant Portuguese communities or have a history with Portugal. Participating countries are founding members Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Macau ( Chinese SAR), Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and PrÃncipe, and associate members Equatorial Guinea, India and Sri Lanka. In addition, Ghana, Flores (an island of Indonesia), Mauritius and Morocco have also expressed the desire to participate in future events. This event is similar in concept to the Commonwealth Games (for members of the Commonwealth of Nations) and the Jeux de la Francophonie (for the Francophone community). 2006 Lusophony Games
The 1st Lusophone Games ( pt, 1.os Jogos da Lusofonia; ) were held in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China between 7 and 15 October 2006. The 2006 Games were the first edition of this multi-sport event for Portuguese-speaking countries and territories, under the banner of ACOLOP. The site for the opening ceremony was the Macau Stadium and the closing ceremony was held at the Macau East Asian Games Dome. The mascot for the games was a dog named Leo. The pronunciation of "Leo" in Portuguese is similar to Chinese (''Lei O'') and it means "Come to Macau". Due to the high expenses, some of the participating NOCs received financial support from the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Committee of Portugal. The Football tournament of the 2006 Lusophony Games was played in Macau, People's Republic of China. The venues were the Campo Desportivo e Pavilhão da U.C.T.M. and the Macau Stadium. The tournament was played from 4 to 10 October 2006, and it was only a men's competition. The 2009 Lusophony Games was the 2nd Lusophony Games ( pt, 2.os Jogos da Lusofonia), a multi-sport event for delegations representing Portuguese-speaking National Olympic committees. It took place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 11 to 19 July 2009. The Pavilhão Atlântico acted as the main venue, staging the opening ceremonies and the majority of the sporting events. Host decision The organization was awarded to Portugal during the 6th ACOLOP general assembly, gathered in Macau, on 10 October 2006. 2014 Lusophony Games
The 2014 Lusophone Games was the 3rd edition of the Lusophone Games, a multi-sport event that represent athletes from Portuguese-speaking countries and territories. It was held from 18 to 29 January 2014 in the Indian state of Goa. Brazil and Sri Lanka also put in bids to stage the event. Participating delegations represented every Portuguese-speaking National Olympic Committee and other countries with historic ties to Portugal. The Chairman for these Games was Manohar Parrikar, the chief minister of Goa and the Chief Executive Officer was Keshav Chandra IAS, Secretary to the Government of Goa for Sports and Education. The Games were originally planned to be held in 2013, but was postponed and moved to the January 2014 dates. Since Goa was elected to host the games, Brazil chose not to send their athletes because of the ¨huge postponement¨ of the competition.
