Rosendo Balinas
Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. (September 10, 1941 – September 24, 1998) was a chess grandmaster from the Philippines. FIDE awarded him the International Master title in 1975 and the International Grandmaster title in 1976. He was Philippines' second chess grandmaster. Balinas was a lawyer by profession, as well as an award winning chess writer and journalist. Chess career Balinas was considered the strongest Asian player during the 1960s and 1970s, before the emergence of compatriot Eugenio Torre. Balinas won international chess tournaments in Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, and Odessa, USSR during the period. John Paul Gomez
John Paul Gomez (born May 23, 1986) is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 2007 and International Grandmaster (GM) in 2009. He is a three-time Filipino national junior champion and has also won the Filipino Chess Championship. Early life and education Gomez is from Biñan, Laguna Province in the Philippines. He began playing chess when he was three years old and began beating older players when he was five. After becoming bored with chess, he started playing tennis, even becoming a top player in the ten-and-under age category; a fractured hand suffered while playing tennis, however, led him to switch back to chess. Gomez graduated from De La Salle University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Darwin Laylo (born 1980) is a Filipino chess grandmaster. Laylo won the Philippine national championship in 2004 and 2006. These wins earned him a place on the Philippine teams in the 2004 Calvià Olympiad and in 2006 at Turin. In 2006 he gained two GM norms, the first from the 2006 Malaysian Open, and the second at the 2006 Bad Wiessee tournament in Germany. His third and final norm came in the 2007 Asian Chess Championship in Cebu, Philippines. Laylo placed in the top ten of the 2007 Asian Chess Championship, earning a place in the 2007 World Chess Cup, November, 2007, in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Buenaventura "Bong" Mendieta Villamayor (born May 4, 1967) is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2000, becoming the fourth from the Philippines to achieve this feat. Villamayor won the national championship of the Philippines in 1998. He competed in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2000 in New Delhi, India. In 2017, Villamayor transferred his national federation to represent Singapore. Rogelio Antonio Jr. (born February 19, 1962) is a Filipino chess grandmaster, who was awarded the title in 1993. He is affectionately known as "Joey" Antonio or GM Joey. Antonio finished tied for 3rd-8th places in the 2009 Asian Chess Championship (ultimately finishing in 6th place after tiebreaks) and became the first player in the Philippines' history to qualify for the World Cup later in 2009.
