Buenaventura Villamayor
Buenaventura "Bong" Mendieta Villamayor (born May 4, 1967) is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2000, becoming the fourth from the Philippines to achieve this feat. Villamayor won the national championship of the Philippines in 1998. He competed in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2000 in New Delhi, India. In 2017, Villamayor transferred his national federation to represent Singapore. 38th Chess Olympiad
The 38th Chess Olympiad (german: Die 38. Schacholympiade), organized by FIDE and comprising an open and a women's tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place from 12 to 25 November 2008 in Dresden, Germany. There were 146 teams in the open event and 111 in the women's event. In total, 1277 players were registered. Both tournament sections were officiated by international arbiter Ignatius Leong (Singapore). In a change from recent Olympiads, the number of rounds of the Swiss system were reduced from 13 to 11 with accelerated pairings. For the first time, the women's division, like the open division, was played over four boards per round, with each team allowed one alternate for a total of five players. Asian Chess Championship
The Asian Chess Championship is a chess tournament open to all players from Asian chess federations ( FIDE zones from 3.1 to 3.7). It's held with the Swiss system and consists in two divisions, Open and Women's, the latter of which is reserved to female players. Both sections determine the Asian champions and qualify a certain number of players for the FIDE World Cup and knockout Women's World Chess Championship respectively. The 2007 championship was a FIDE Zone 3 qualification event for the 2007 Chess World Cup, the next stage in the 2010 World Chess Championship. Jayson Gonzales
Jayson Gonzales (born 2 May 1969, Quezon City) is a Filipino chess grandmaster (2008). He played for the Philippines in the Chess Olympiads of 2004 and 2008. In 1998, he won the Southern California Open. In 2001, he tied for 4–5th with Alan Sayson in the Philippine Chess Championship. In 2004, tied for 3rd–4th with Sergei Tiviakov in the Calvia Open and came third behind Jaan Ehlvest and John Fedorowicz in the 88th Marshall Chess Club Championship in New York. Darwin Laylo
Darwin Laylo (born 1980) is a Filipino chess grandmaster. Laylo won the Philippine national championship in 2004 and 2006. These wins earned him a place on the Philippine teams in the 2004 Calvià Olympiad and in 2006 at Turin. In 2006 he gained two GM norms, the first from the 2006 Malaysian Open, and the second at the 2006 Bad Wiessee tournament in Germany. His third and final norm came in the 2007 Asian Chess Championship in Cebu, Philippines. Laylo placed in the top ten of the 2007 Asian Chess Championship, earning a place in the 2007 World Chess Cup, November, 2007, in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. John Paul Gomez
John Paul Gomez (born May 23, 1986) is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 2007 and International Grandmaster (GM) in 2009. He is a three-time Filipino national junior champion and has also won the Filipino Chess Championship. Early life and education Gomez is from Biñan, Laguna Province in the Philippines. He began playing chess when he was three years old and began beating older players when he was five. After becoming bored with chess, he started playing tennis, even becoming a top player in the ten-and-under age category; a fractured hand suffered while playing tennis, however, led him to switch back to chess. Gomez graduated from De La Salle University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Wesley Barbossa So (born October 9, 1993) is a Filipino and American chess grandmaster and 3-time U.S. Chess Champion (in 2017, 2020, and 2021). He is also a three-time Philippine Chess Champion. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822, making him the fifth-highest rated player in history.
