FS Class ALe 803
The ALe 803 are a series of EMUs built in the 1960s for the Italian state railways FS, and now used by the railway company Trenitalia. Description Each trainset is composed by 3 or 4 cars: a power car (ALe 803), 1 or 2 trailers (Le 803.100), and a control car (Le 803.000). The numbers are ALe 803.001–053 for the power cars, Le 803.101–161 for the trailers, and Le 803.001–053 for the control cars. History The ALe 803 were conceived at the end of the 1950s to resolve the increasing problems of commuting around the larger cities of Italy. They were designed together with the ALe 601 series luxury railcars, with a similar structure and shared components. In 1959 the Ferrovie dello Stato ordered a first series of 20 trainsets, and a second series of 15 trainsets specifically conceived for the Naples metropolitan railway, with fewer seats and more austere interiors. Each set was made of three distinct cars - power car, trailer and control car. Those series were delivere ...

Società Nazionale Officine Di Savigliano
Società Nazionale Officine di Savigliano (SNOS), also known as Savigliano, was one of the most prestigious Italian industrial companies of the twentieth century. It had interests in many sectors including mechanical and electrical engineering. It was founded in Turin on 17 July 1880, with a share capital of one million lire, with the aim of undertaking the "construction and repair of railway material, metal bridges, canopies, mechanical, electrical and aeronautical constructions as well as woodworking. generally". History The origins of Savigliano are intertwined with those of one of the first Piedmontese railway companies, the Società della Ferrovia Torino-Cuneo, which had built a workshop for the maintenance and repair of its rolling stock next to Savigliano station. In 1869, with the transfer of ownership of the line to the Società per le Ferrovie dell'Alta Italia (SFAI), the workshop was closed. On 14 December 1879, the municipality of Savigliano signed a memorandum of ...

Railway Locomotives Introduced In 1961
Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. In contrast to road transport, where the vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles (rolling stock) are directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Tracks usually consist of steel rails, installed on sleepers (ties) set in ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as "slab track", in which the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface. Rolling stock in a rail transport system generally encounters lower frictional resistance than rubber-tyred road vehicles, so passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilit ...

SEPSA Class EN 300
The EN 300 are a series of EMUs built in 1977 for the Italian railway company SEPSA, used on the commuter railways Circumflegrea and Cumana. Description Each trainset is composed by 2 cars: a railcar (EN 300) and a control car (RN 300). The numbers are EN 301–307 for the railcars and RN 301–307 for the control cars. History The EN 300 were ordered in 1976 to renew the train sets of the SEPSA. They were delivered in 1977. The EN 300 derivate from the ALe 803 of the Ferrovie dello Stato, but with less maximal speed and a shorter loading gauge A loading gauge is a diagram or physical structure that defines the maximum height and width dimensions in railway vehicles and their loads. Their purpose is to ensure that rail vehicles can pass safely through tunnels and under bridges, and ke .... They are used on the Circumflegrea and Cumana lines. Bibliography * L. FS Class ALe 724
The ALe 724 are a class of EMUs of the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato, projected for suburban and regional services. History In 1978 the Ferrovie dello Stato received a series of prototype-EMUs, the so-called ″ Treni GAI″, that had for the first time a chopper technology instead of the classical electric equipment. As the tests of the ″treni GAI″ were positive, in May 1979 the FS ordered a series of EMUs derived from them. The lombard regional railway company FNM had already ordered in 1978 some similar railcars, numbered E.750. The FS ordered 60 trains, each made of 4 elements: 30 trains had two railcars and two trailers (ALe 724 + Le 884 + Le 883 + ALe 724) and due to their high acceleration were destined to the suburban services; the other 30 trains had only one railcar, with a driving trailer on the other side (ALe 724 + Le 884 + Le 884 + Le 724) and were destined to the regional services. Each train can carry 320 seated people. The trains were delivered from 198 ...

FS Class ALe 801/940
The ALe 801/940 are a series of EMUs built in the 1970s for the Italian state railway FS, now used by its successor, Trenitalia. Description The ALe 801/940 are usually run in 4 car trains, with a power car at each end (ALe 801 and ALe 940) and two trailers (Le 108) in the middle. History In the early 1970s, Ferrovie dello Stato decided to improve the rolling stock for its commuter rail services. As chopper technology was at that time only at a prototype-state (with the so-called ″ Treni GAI″), FS decided to order EMUs with traditional electric equipment. The ALe 801/940 were ordered in 1973, as an evolution of the older ALe 803, with better capacity and acceleration. These trains were delivered between 1975 and 1979 and put into service around the larger cities of Italy. Originally painted in a showy orange and yellow livery, that gave them the nickname of "Arancia Meccanica" (Italian title of the movie ''A Clockwork Orange ''A Clockwork Orange'' may refer to: * ' ...

Genoa Urban Railway Service
The Genoa urban railway service is operated by Trenitalia on the lines around the city of Genoa. History The urban railway service in Genoa was opened in 1964 by the Ferrovie dello Stato. It was the second urban railway service after the "metropolitana FS" in Naples.Giovanni Cornolò: ''Automotrici elettriche dalle origini al 1983.'' Duegi Editrice, 2011, p. 243. The FS used the modern EMUs ALe 803, projected for commuter rail services. In 1976 they were substituted by their newer evolution, the ALe 801/940. The service suffered because of the overcrowded section between Sampierdarena and Brignole, so from 1987 the line was doubled building another two tracks, by reusing some old harbor branches. The new bypass was opened on 23 May 1993 and included a new underground station at Piazza Principe. During the years some new stops have been added: in 1994 Costa di Sestri Ponente, and in 2005 San Biagio and Via di Francia; in 2006 the old Pra station has been substituted by a ...

Line 2 (Naples Metro)
Line 2 (Italian: ''Linea 2'') is a rapid transit service operated by Trenitalia in the city of Naples, Italy. It connects 12 stations. Line 2 operates on the urban railway, which crosses the city of Naples from west to east. All regional trains, differently from metropolitan trains, are received by Campi Flegrei station in different platforms. Line 2 also has some minor regional extensions. These are the Naples-Caserta and Naples-Salerno (all these services use the Passante rapid transit railway, of which the latter two start from Campi Flegrei station). History The construction of the line, part of the ″direttissima″ Rome–Naples, was begun in 1911 and after a suspension during World War I, it was completed in 1925 between ''Pozzuoli'' and ''Piazza Garibaldi'', electrified with third rail. Two years later the ″direttissima″ was completed, and the electrical rail service was extended towards Villa Literno and San Giovanni-Barra.Giovanni Cornolò: ''Automotrici elettr ...
