FIFA Futsal World Cup Qualification (CONMEBOL)
The South American Futsal World Cup qualifiers ( es, Eliminatorias Sudamericanas de Futsal) is a futsal tournament organized by CONMEBOL to determine which South American teams qualified for the FIFA Futsal World Cup. The tournament has been organized every four years since 2012. Prior to it, the Copa América de Futsal was used as the South American qualifying tournament. In general, the top four teams of the tournament qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup. However, if the World Cup hosts are from South America, only the top three teams plus the World Cup hosts qualify, such as in 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup, 2016 when Colombia were the World Cup hosts. CONMEBOL
The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL, , or CSF; es, Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol; pt, Confederação Sul-Americana de Futebol) is the continental governing body of football in South America (apart from Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana) and it is one of FIFA's six continental confederations. The oldest continental confederation in the world, its headquarters are located in Luque, Paraguay, near Asunción. CONMEBOL is responsible for the organization and governance of South American football's major international tournaments. With 10 member soccer associations, it has the fewest members of all the confederations in FIFA. 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup Qualification (CONMEBOL)
The 2020 South American Futsal World Cup qualifiers was a men's futsal tournament that was used as the South American qualifying tournament to determine the four CONMEBOL teams playing in the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup (originally 2020 but postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic) in Lithuania. The tournament was held in Carlos Barbosa, Brazil between 1–9 February 2020. Brazil were the defending champions. Champions Argentina, runners-up Brazil, third-placed Paraguay and fourth-placed Venezuela qualified for the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup as the CONMEBOL representatives. Futsal
Futsal is a football-based game played on a hardcourt, hard court smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football and Indoor soccer, indoor football. Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor soccer, it is played on a hard court surface marked by lines; walls or boards are not used. It is played with a smaller, harder, lower-bounce ball than football. The surface, ball and rules favour ball control and passing in small spaces. The game emphasizes control, improvisation, creativity and technique. Naming ''Futsal'' comes from the Portuguese ''futebol de salão'' and from the Spanish ''fútbol sala'' or ''fútbol de salón'' (all translatable as "indoor football"). FIFA Futsal World Cup
The FIFA Futsal World Cup is an international futsal competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA, the sport's global governing body. Since the first edition that took place in 1989 in the Netherlands, the tournament has been held every four years since 1992 in the even year between two 11-a-side World Cups. The current champions are Portugal, who won their first world title after beating the 2016 defending champions Argentina in the final of the 2021 tournament in Lithuania. All events prior to 2008 were 16-team events. The first event featured 6 teams from Europe, 3 from South America, 2 from Africa, 2 from Asia, 2 from North and Central America and 1 from Oceania. Copa América De Futsal
The CONMEBOL Copa América de Futsal is the main national futsal competition of the CONMEBOL nations organized by the FIFA. It was first held in 1964 and was organized by Asociación Mundial de Futsal (AMF) as "Sudamericano". The tournament was also a qualifier for the AMF Futsal World Cup. The AMF organised the championship until 1989. In 1992 Conmebol organized its first South American in Aracaju under the name "Campeonato Conmebol de Futsal (FIFA)". In that tournament only 4 national teams participated (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Ecuador) and it was used as a World Cup qualifier as well than the tournaments of 1996 and 2000 that were called with the same name. The other tournaments played between 1995 and 1999 were played in Brazil and were called Taça América de Futsal FIFA. 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup
The 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup was the eighth FIFA Futsal World Cup, the quadrennial international futsal championship contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament was held in Colombia from 10 September to 1 October 2016. Brazil and Spain, the two teams that won all seven previous tournaments, were eliminated in the round of 16 and quarter-finals respectively. Their elimination makes this tournament was the first in which the champions was neither of them. The tournament acted as the South American qualifying tournament for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand. It was held from 15 to 22 April 2012 in Gramado, Brazil.
