Emmanuel Leutze
Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (May 24, 1816July 18, 1868) was a German-American history painter best known for his 1851 painting '' Washington Crossing the Delaware''. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Biography Leutze was born in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Württemberg, Germany. Later he was brought to the United States as a child in 1825. His parents settled first in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and then at Philadelphia. The first development of his artistic talent occurred while he was attending the sickbed of his father, when he attempted drawing to occupy the long hours of waiting. His father died in 1831. At 14, he was painting portraits for $5 apiece. Through such work, he supported himself after the death of his father. Schwäbisch Gmünd (, until 1934: Gmünd; Swabian: ''Gmẽẽd'' or ''Gmend'') is a city in the eastern part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. With a population of around 60,000, the city is the second largest in the Ostalb district and the whole East Württemberg region after Aalen. Carrie Rebora Barratt is an American art historian specializing in museum administration and collaborative nonprofit leadership. She has worked in this domain in New York City since the 1980s. Barratt was Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture (1989–2009), and Manager of the Henry R. Luce Center for the Study of American Art (1989–2009) and Deputy Director for Collections (2009-2018) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She served as the Chief Executive Officer and William C. Malkasten (English: "Paintbox") is a progressive German artists' association, founded in Düsseldorf in 1848, during the March Revolution. Since 1867, their headquarters have been in the Pempelfort district. History During the unrest in 1848, artists also began to take part in political discussions. In August of that year, the held an event called the "Fest der Deutschen Einheit" (Festival for German Unity). Many artists and sculptors associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule took part in its artistic design. On the night of the celebration, they decided to establish an artist's association which, a few days later, they named "Malkasten", at the suggestion of Karl Hübner. ''Christopher Columbus Before the Council of Salamanca'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by the German-American artist Emanuel Leutze, created in 1841. It is held in the Louvre, in Paris. It was lent to the Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon in 2014 for its exhibition ''L'invention du Passé. Histoires de cœur et d'épée 1802–1850.
