Mariem Hassan
Mariem Hassan ( ar, مريم حسان; May 1958 – 22 August 2015) was a Sahrawi singer and lyricist from Western Sahara. She usually sang in Hassaniyya, an Arabic dialect spoken mostly in Western Sahara and Mauritania, and occasionally in Spanish. Her use of the Spanish language was related to the former status of Western Sahara as a Spanish colony. Biography Life Mariem Hassan was born in May 1958 in the ''Ued'' Tazua, 20 km. away from Smara, Spanish Sahara. She was the third of ten siblings in a nomadic family. Music and poetry was important in the family and various relatives were singers, poets or dancers. In 1975, following the Green March and the Madrid Accords which ceded the territory to Morocco and Mauritania, she went with her family, first to Meharrize and finally to the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria, where she worked as nurse. Shouka (album)
''Shouka'' is the second album of Sahrawi singer Mariem Hassan. It was recorded again at Axis studios, in Madrid, and produced by Manuel Domínguez, who is also the boss of the label Nubenegra. The album reached Number 1 on the World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) in March 2010. "Shouka", the central song that titles the album, is a new experience in the Sahrawi music, as it is structured as a cantata. Taking the verses of Sahrawi poet Lamine Allal, Hassan developed a nine paragraph critical response to the 1976 speech of then Spanish opposition leader and later president of Spain Felipe González at the Sahrawi refugee camps (he compromised Spanish Socialist Workers' Party support to the Sahrawi people until "the final victory"), by using all scales and rhythms of the Haul. Sahrawi People
The Sahrawi, or Saharawi people ( ar, صحراويون '; es, Saharaui), are an ethnic group and nation native to the western part of the Sahara desert, which includes the Western Sahara, southern Morocco, much of Mauritania, and along the southwestern border of Algeria. They are of mixed Berber, Arab and Black African descent. As with most peoples living in the Sahara, the Sahrawi culture is a mix of Arab and indigenous African elements. The modern Sahrawi culture consists of a Berber core and considerable Arab influences. Sahrawis are composed of many tribes and are largely speakers of the Hassaniya dialect of Arabic. World Village Festival
The World Village Festival ( fi, Maailma kylässä, sv, Världen i byn) is a free music and culture festival held annually in Helsinki, Finland at the end of May. In 2021 the event will be held virtually. Over the weekend, the festival offers dozens of opportunities to act for a just world and experience music, documentary films and discussions on current issues. The event is admission free and offers much to see and do for visitors of all ages. Between 1995 and 2005 the festival was held every other year, and since 2005 annually in late May. According to the organizers, some 70,000 to 80,000 people visit the festival annually while the number of exhibitors is around 400.
