EXCL Communications
EXCL Communications was a Spanish-language broadcasting company founded in 1989 by Athena and Christopher Marks. It acquired its first radio stations, San Jose, California's KBRG and KLOK from brothers Danny Villanueva and James Villanueva (Radio América, Inc) in 1989. After its purchase of Embarcadero Media in 1997, it owned and operated 18 radio stations (many of which used the Radio Romántica Radio Romántica was a name used by EXCL Communications (later Entravision) for various Spanish-language radio stations from the 1990s through 2005. KBRG (100.3 FM ''Amor 100.3'') is a commercial radio station licensed to San Jose, California, with a Spanish AC radio format. The station is owned by TelevisaUnivision. Its studios are located at 1940 Zanker Road in San Jose, and the transmitter is on Loma Prieta Peak on the Santa Clara/Santa Cruz County line. History KEEN-FM and KBAY KEEN-FM came to air March 4, 1963, after rushing to meet FCC deadlines and fix issues with its problematic transmitter. It was owned by United Broadcasting as the FM counterpart to KEEN AM 1370, but it offered easy listening music instead of KEEN's characteristic country format. In 1967, KEEN-FM became KBAY, an easy listening station that remained as such for decades. In the early 1980s, it moved toward a soft adult contemporary sound. KLOK (AM)
KLOK (1170 kHz "Radio Mirchi 1170 AM") is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting a radio format of Hindi language talk and Bollywood music. Licensed to San Jose, California, the station serves the San Francisco Bay Area. Since June 2009, KLOK 1170 AM has served the South Asian community. By day, KLOK is powered at 50,000 watts, the maximum for American AM stations. At night, it reduces power to 9,000 watts. It uses a directional antenna in the daytime, helping it cover most of the Bay Area. History E. L. Barker founded KLOK and began broadcasting on October 13, 1946. Initially, the station broadcast with a 5,000 watt daytime signal, later adding a 1,000 watt nighttime signal in 1952. Danny Villanueva
Daniel Dario Villanueva (November 5, 1937 – June 18, 2015) was an American football professional player, television and Major League Soccer executive. Villanueva was a placekicker and punter who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys. Villanueva, who was of Mexican American descent, played college football at New Mexico State University. A news director and broadcasting executive, Villanueva was a co-founder of Univision, a major Spanish-language television network in the United States. Early years Villanueva graduated in 1956 from Calexico Union High School (the Bulldogs) and attended Reedley College, before accepting a scholarship to play college football at New Mexico State University. Radio Romántica
Radio Romántica was a name used by EXCL Communications (later Entravision) for various Spanish-language radio stations from the 1990s through 2005. The earliest known reference to Radio Romántica is from 1997, at the time when EXCL moved KBRG 104.9 to 100.3 San Jose during a frequency swap deal from American Radio Systems. Later EXCL's Radio Romántica Spanish AC format was adapted to KJMN Denver, KRZY-FM Albuquerque, an unknown Salinas station, and another unknown station were using the name. Entravision acquired the Radio Romántica name and stations following its purchase of EXCL Communications in 2000. The name was subsequently used on several of Entravision's other stations, including KLOB Palm Springs, KRRE Sacramento, KCVR Modesto, KVVA/KDVA Phoenix, and KRVA Dallas.
